We have been to local markets in many countries, so had to see this one. Wow, but there fruit and veg looks great (like it tastes) - looks like the quality one would find in Woolworths in South Africa or Marks & Spencers in the UK

We have seen better markets, but that goes for almost everything in Maputo, so defenitely worth a look. Food and non-food here, lots of wigs.

The main entrance is through a large gate on which “Municipalidade de 1901” is written. As soon as you enter what attracts, like all tropical markets, are the colors of the fruit and the goods of all types stacked on the stands behind which the sellers observe you to understand if you are a tourist there just for photos or if you intend to buy something. We bought some very good fruit and, although we didn't stay long, we weren't bothered by anyone. Nothing special but it is worth placing it in the tour of the city.

1901 is proudly written above the main gate at the entrance of the Mercado Municipal. It shows the Portugese rulers at the time were serious about turning Lourenco Marques into an urban center of significance. The architecture is robust. Solid materials were used for the construction.

Nowadays it is one of the many local bazars in Maputo. Fresh fruit and vegetables are the main produce on offer, but fish, herbs and spices, household goods, wigs and other items are also for sale.

Very good to get an idea of local life.

A very typical local market with all the needs for locals shopping, fruits, vegetable and fresh fish. A little overwhelming on a hot day with many exotic aromas and sights and not a sniff of a breeze!

Down town Maputo. Busy place. If you are looking local market with fresh food and goods, you are at the right place. Please be careful with any value objects in the car and wallet/ purse. It is a good great place to shop. ..

We were there on a Sunday, so it was quiet: but this meant that we did not get hassled, as other reviewers seem to have been. Pretty standard fruit and veg market, plus occasional stalls with woven baskets. Amazing number of shops selling wigs and hair extensions. Make a point of looking at the posted bills - about elections, cleanliness etc. You'll learn a bit about Maputo ..

Walked from a township in Mozambique and went into town. Since being the first time in Mozambique, I must say it was an experience to be repeated.

Picked up some mangoes and other exotic fruit. There are many agressive hawkers who thrust art into your face and are desperate for you to buy something. Also, children will want to hold your shopping bags and will follow you until you relent.

I wanted to like this place but aside from being unbelievably harassed by groups of men outside - as a single blonde female there I did not feel safe at all - once inside there really was hardly anything there and crazy prices targets at tourists and quite small also. I did not enjoy this at all and usually markets are my favourite places!
