What an ugly square! With that ridiculous statue in the middle and the "palace" behind it that's way past the possibility of restauring it....

Once the center of Portugese colonial power in Southern Africa, this huge square has lost significance as the modern center shifted more towards the southeast and north parts of the city.

As with most streetnames in Maputo the name of the square was changed after independence in 1975. Formerly it was called Mouzinho de Albuquerque square. The statue of the former governor was replaced by one of Samora Machel (first president of independent Mozambique). If you are interested Mouzinho de Albuquerque on his horse can still be 'admired' in the Fortaleza (fort) museum. It is much smaller than the giant statue of Machel made in North Korea.

If you visit, take an umbrella with you for protection against the sun, as there is no shade at the square.

while in Maputo of course. You have a great view from further back and can also see the Cathedral in addition to the City Hall.

Nothing here to detain the traveller, other than the vendors who descend on you, attempting to make a small living. It is a square with buildings and a statue, but really nothing of great note.

Take a couple of photos and move on. Impressive statue but not a special reason to make a separate trip, You will most likely find yourself at the square if you just walk around Maputo,

The square is something to visit if you are in Maputo. It is in the center of a huge round about of roads and to stand next to it you feel so small.

This Sq. was our First experience of Maputo since it was just few steps away from our Hotel(Maputo Hotel), so we visited there in the evening. it was a street concert there since we arrived on Maputo day(Nov 10).
the Sq. offers you few nice places such as the statue of the First president, city Hall building and the Cathedral of our Lady. i think you need to visit this Sq. as an important part of Maputo.

It might perhaps not be worth a special trip to see independence square. It is good for a quick drive-by as part of an overall tour of the city. A quick photo opportunity and then drive on. Area can be a bit grubby.

This Square is where you could see the statue of Samora Machel, the first President of Mozambique, which is in front of the City Hall of Maputo
