We were on Mauritius for 3 days as part of a cruise, wanted to be a bit more active and Le Pouce was rated well on many portals.
The good news: once you are at the top, a beautiful view awaits you - even if you "only" do the classic trail and don't climb all the way to the summit.
The fact that many people write about the poor condition of the trail didn't put us off, but it's really not that beautiful. It goes over hill and dale and the trail is not recommended when it's wet because it quickly becomes slippery.
The official end is indicated on a small plateau, from there the trail continues to the summit. Since - when we were at the top - everything was covered in clouds, we gave up.
Another positive thing to mention is the fairly large, video-monitored parking lot at the starting point at Moka.

Starts at a small free car park if going by the Moka start point. Taxis can be seen dropping off and waiting for people here, so that is possible if you don't have a hire car. Apparently you can also start from the Port Louis side but it is longer.
Bug spray recommended as the initial part is under shade and among the trees. The latter part is in the open, so sun lotion and an early start help. Walking shoes are helpful in the mixture of terrain.
There are multiple routes when starting from the Moka side, the one most go for is the 'classic' which is marked in green on signs on the way up. This goes to the top you'd expect, the others vear off onto a different summit.
The initial track is rocky on an incline, straightforward in the dry but potentially dangerous when wet. There is a mini flat grass summit with good views near the top, and after this it quickly becomes scrambling rather than walking. Not technically hard, but for those with a fear of heights the wind and height make the last bit a challenge. It would be worth it even for the summit before the climb.
Took about an hour and a half up from bottom to top, then less coming down.

Beautiful. It took us 2h50 round trip. At the top 360 view of Mauritius. Absolutely unforgettable. Beautiful views all along the hike. The last 50 meters are harder, but it's worth it.

Hike from Port Louis (not indicated at all). Allow at least 3 hours AR. Shorter and easier by Moka. We were lucky enough to come across monkeys on the way there, and to taste wild guavas and guava trees. We really enjoyed this very natural hike. The last part is indeed more technical but if you are not prone to vertigo it will work.
A very nice 360 degree view which greatly rewards this effort

Easy 1-2 hour hike (ca 400m altitude gain) from St Pierre village, no guides required, the path is clearly defined most of the way. The approach can be a bit wet and slippery in August (winter in Mauritius), but no ropes/security is required. Can also hike from Port Louis but its much longer as the altitude gain is ca 800m. Nice 360 deg view from the top.

Le Pouce mountain is the third highest one in Mauritius. Its height is 812 meters. Its name derives from the peculiar shape of its peak reminding that of a thumb. It can be seen from Port Louis, and from its top there is a fantastic panoramic scene of that city. That’s one of the reasons why it’s a popular hike both among the local people and tourists. At any rate, in case the hike is made, once on the base of the thumb and due to the steepness thereof a considerable effort is required in order to reach the top concerned. The mountain lies in the Moka Range and constitutes the second highest peak in it. It’s been ascertained that Charles Darwin climbed up the mountain in 1836.
A nice view of Le Pouce can be enjoyed from around the church «Marie Reine de la Paix» which is a beautiful monument and also an appropriate place to have excellent view on Mauritius capital city. Around the church there is a very nice garden and the spot is picturesque and peaceful. Therefore the visit of that church is indeed advisable since in this way one has the possibility to admire the architectural characteristics of an interesting building and at the same time enjoy the stated view over Le Pouce.

Once you get to the top there is a 360 degree view of the entire island. We climbed on a clear sunny day so the view was breathtaking. The climb isn't very hard and can be done without a guide. We were lucky enough to have a family member that did the hike in the past come along but the route is pretty straight forward. If you don't normally do this sort of stuff, I would still recommend a guide, just so you don't get frustrated if you make a wrong turn.
There are people climbing all the time and this is a great site to see if you need something a bit different on vacation.
The "Thumb/pouce" portion can get a bit steep but the climb/hike in general is still moderate difficulty.
Amazing morning and 100% recommend seeing the view.

An excellent for those who like mountain climbing but who dont want go get tired too much.
A perfect place to admire the country through a different angle.
Almoste near the cloubs.
Can be climb in less an hour and have a picnic up then down after some pictures.
The tracks is easily accessible and dont forget your sun cream or ur coat in case it rains.

Part of the Moka mountain range. If you clench your fist with the thumb raised and its upper outline is exactly that of Le Pouce Mountain as seen from Port Louis. Le Pouce or 'the thumb' is the third highest mountain on Mauritius at 811 metres and the one that most people climb for its 360 degree view.

Relatively easy hike, while views from the top are wonderful. We did this hike in 2 hours 20 minutes, including 20 minutes we spent on the top. Most of the hike is a walk through a shaded area, and only the last part requires a bit of climbing. Better wear hiking shoes and do not attempt the climbing part in wet conditions. We did the hike from Moka starting point (passing St Pierre), there are a few parking places there. The path is clearly visible and marked in blue/white at some points. We used maps. me app, which works offline and accurately shows the hiking paths.
