My wife and I visited Trou aux Cerfs yesterday and started to walk around the crater, after a few minutes a guy who claimed to work for the place came up to us and started telling us things about the crater, we hadn't asked him to do this.
He wore grey trousers, a blue shirt with an official type badge on the pocket, a baseball cap and carried a brown umbrella.
He stayed with us until we were about halfway round the crater, during this time he pointed out a few things then took out a knife and carved off some wood from a Camphor tree, his story then changed from working for them to having worked for them previously but now retired and working as a freelenace tourist guide.
He then wanted money for his 'time as a guide' so we reluctantly gave him 100 MRU, has wasn't very happy with this and said he usually got 10 or 20 Euro. As we had already seen he had a knife we gave him another 100 MRU and walked off as we didn't want any trouble.
The visit to Trou aux Cerfs could have been great as it's a lovely place with amazing views but it was ruined by this guy.
Best advice is just to tell anyone who approaches that you'd rather be on your own.

It was a beautiful walk around the rim of this dormant volcano. Parking was seamless and the hike wasn’t too strenuous! It was a lovely view!

Mauritius is a fascinating small island. There are many and varied beautiful and culturally interesting things to see. Trou aux Certs is one of them, but it is difficult to see the lake at the bottom of the crater. We were on a tour, so there maybe somewhere for the more adventurous to see the view in your photograph. Further south is the Grand Bassin, sacred to the Hindu population, Black River Gorges national park for its beautiful waterfalls, Alexandra and Chamaral Falls and seven coloured earths, coloured red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow. A recommended destination.

The views from here were amazing the day we visited. You could see for miles and it was a very pleasant walk (although a little windy) from the car park to the volcano. Definitely worth a visit. We were there about 45 minutes.

Visited here as a stop off on a day trip. Windy bendy and steep roads up to it. Not a lot to see but a hole. Some great views though. 5 mins is enough time here

I guess all volcanoes are made different and this one definitely pulled a short one.

As others have pointed out, there isn’t much to see apart from an overgrown hole and people crowd at a few “lookout spots”to get a glimpse of what’s inside.

If there are any food and drink options (or toilets), we couldn’t find it. There were two guys selling souvenirs and fruit though.

There are decent views of the surrounding but I’d say you get better ones driving on the motorway.

Unless you have a specific interest, I’d recommend to avoid it.

Really enjoyed our visit here. Interesting to see a dormant volcano. I thought the viewing points were very good. You were able to see how deep it was. Icecream van in carpark and a stall selling gifts

Maybe it used to be better before they put a fence around the perimeter and let the overgrowth happen. It’s just a hole with a mud puddle at the bottom. You get a paved road around the perimeter and sometimes you can see between the trees to see the mud. The weather radar tower is more interesting to look at. This place would still be dull with an active volcano.

Even more interesting is the nature around. If you look carefully you will find wild grown pineapple, ginger or life saviour trees. There are also „boxing“ trees which are really soft and they were used as paper earlier. And there are two really rare black trees. You will also find a big tower which will warn in case of tycoons and tsunamis sponsored by the Japanese because of overfishing the Mauritius sea back in the past.

Take your time there for a short walk with open eyes and an open mind. There is so much more to see than only a crater.

The best view on the crater you will have maybe 100 meters left of the viewpoint, close to the graves of the slaves that died in the crater.

Should of been better if a small part of the vegetation at the viewpoint is trimmed, to allow a better view. My daughter couldn't see anything.
