The roots tour was very interesting in its self, however, I was somewhat baffled by the selling of pre purchased school supplies for the local school as I was sure the same books were being sold many times over. that said, when in Africa you have to accept that everyone wants money for something and it's just a way of... I travelled by boat with a friend on an organised excursion upriver 28 November. When we arrived at the village we were met by a guide who explained the background to the tour in front of a large anti slavery statue and an old rusty cannon. The trip was scheduled for 2 hours which seemed too long but it was... More

This was our second visit to Albreda and Juffureh, this time with 3 children 12-15. We booked through Bushwacker Tours in the Senegambia strip who were cheaper than the Thomas Cook tour by about 30%, and really well organised. Overall it is a fascinating and humbling trip to the apparent birthplace of Kunte Kinteh, and whether or not the ancestral... More

The journey here was long but it was worthwhile. A hugely thought provoking, inspiration place. Very informative, and very beautiful.

A "Roots" trip was the one essential thing we wanted to do on our first Gambia trip and we took the advice of regular visitors by supporting a local agent rather than using our Tour Operator. We chose Kawsu Tours (close to our Kotu hotel) and were so glad we did. We had the same tour as everyone else but... More

There's not a lot to see, but it's the history you are here for and it is quite emotional to see the horrors of slavery as depicted in the museum and listening to the guide. My only complaint, is that too many children use these visits to beg from visitors which I found very disapointing

I went with a Group 'Rave about Africa' and did not know what to expect. The guide was so informative and knew his stuff. I was glad I had this experience with a group and conversations continue on the boat ride back to the hotel. A splendid and sobering experience.

We had a wonderful reception when we arrived at Juffureh, the children were singing and we had a dinner for all of the guests at the Roots Festival 2014. I must say in all the years I have been coming to Juffureh, the Guide is the most wonderful friendly and helpful man, make sure you give him a tip for... More

We only did one trip so was hoping for a good experience. After paying over £100 with Thomas Cook 2 people we were very disappointed. The boat was overcrowded and uncomfortable. The river is so wide there isn't much to see. Once at our destination we were followed everywhere by guards and local tourist guides who are already paid, but... More
