Merkato indeed lives up to its reputation as one of the largest open market in Africa where you can practically find anything. We went there not really for shopping but ended up buying a few stuffs, like souvenirs, local made leather products etc.. However, just...More

I don't like the idea of getting a guide just to walk through a market, but I wish I would have. Without one, my experience was only average, but I'm sure it would have been far better with someone who knows the place well. Merkato...More

The Merkato in Addis Ababa, one of Africa's most bustling capitals, is an unforgettable experience, whether you are interested in buying something or just want to see the other side of life. Reputedly the biggest outdoor market on the continent of Africa, Merkato offers something...More

I took a Merkato tour by Yared (+251 963 72 7196), and it was great experience. Yared knows the market extremely well and was kind enough to accommodate my requests - traditional dress shopping, local snacks tasting (maize, fresh fruits) etc. Highly recommended to those...More

We love going to markets; it's the best way to see how the locals live. We often just walk around markets on our own, but this one was so large, so busy, and so confusing, we had to use a guide. We're glad we did....More

Tis is a market where you can buy anything. Crouded, noisy, colorful, very local. The best is to visit with the guide. Otherwise stay in the car, but this is not fun then.
