Head to Chiromeda Market to find gabi to take home. Great selection of textiles, and good prices (after the haggling was done). You walk a little more peacefully if you choose to go inside, where it is also somewhat cooler with a little air conditioning. Would definitely take the time to stop by, especially if you are in the Entoto area on your way back down to the city.

The drive to the market is through one of the most spectacular sites you can get of Addis Ababa. We got the real feel of Ethiopia's cultural life. If you are looking for super market style of market..do not come here. But if you want to have a fill of Beautiful traditional Ethiopia, this is the place to come. You'll find an assortment of Ethiopian traditional wear, Sculptures, ladies' bags, T-shirts, and many other goodies. Bargain to your best, you maybe able to bargain down an item 20 Birr or more on an item from a different stall! Scarfs range from 50 - 140 Birr depending on quality and stall, We managed to bargain T shirts down from 70 to 40 Birr each. Ladies will enjoy shopping here! Good to go with a private vehicle and with a native to help with the translation and bargaining, but also to be able to stop along the way for sight seeing. (Ethiopian Birr was 17.1 to the US dol lar by the time we were there).

This market is a good place to shop even if you are short on time. It is definitely possible to get a taxi to drive you here and leave within 10 minutes laden with merchandise. In contrast this would not be possible if you tried this at the more frenetic Merkato. Tourists are a minority at this market.
There is a wide variety of beautiful fabrics, shawls, scarves, dresses, tops and jewelry with lots of choice and really good for gift ideas. However, arguably the bulk of the merchandise are targeted at women. There are a few tailor shops here as well where you could have items stitched for you if you have the time.
Don't accept the first price quoted since it would definitely be aligned with your foreigner status. Stall owners will definitely budge to a certain degree on the prices but will still not drop them to levels that locals would be expected to pay. But these are still incredibly cheap and good value when you consider what you are getting.
TIP: If you are prepared to walk a little further into the market to the less accessible areas you will find more unusual items including mesobs (the Ethiopian woven basket for bread/injera that you place on a table).

A good market on the way to Entoto Hill....good friendly shopkeepers...just keep one thing in mind...the prices are elevated by 50-60%...
Its advisable to negotiate hard and cut the prices into half....
I bought a tshirt for 200birr and got the same tshirt at 80birr in the next shop....
Bargain aggressively for the best prices...

Shiro Meda is a great local market in Addis Ababa especially if you are looking for locally hand woven cotton women dresses decorated with embroidery, scarves, and small gift items.

Shiro Meda is an active, bustling market, we stopped here on our wday back to Addis Ababa from Entoto because I wanted to find a shamma, one of the decorated white shawls I'd seen so many women wearing on Sunday in Addis and Entoto. It didn't take long for me to find exactly what I wanted, and of course I got it for half the original price because I expected to bargain. Get your Ethiopian friends to show you how to wear this properly!

Maercato is overwhelming in size and fun but maybe not the best if you want to buy stuff as tourist. Chi Rome day ia lots of lovely Ethiopian made goods at reasonable prices. Walk around before you purchase because there is a lot of duplication among stores. Bargain like crazy, never pay more than 50% of price. Even better if you have someone who speaks Amhara, then you only pay 25%.

Well worth a wander round and look at the wide variety of stuff for sale. Particularly liked the stalls with local tribal crafts.
They will be surprised if you accept the first price, have a bit of fun and haggle.

The market is on the road to Entoto near the Shiro Meda bus station which is well connected to the city as there are express buses to this station from both Bole and Mexico square.
There are a great number of shops selling textiles: traditional Amharic dresses are the most sold item. I am not an expert in textile, but most of the stuff on sale looked cheap and of low quality. Still if you are into finding different traditional patterns, the variety is huge. There are also some shops selling handicrafts and souvenirs.
