Too crowded for comfort
Jun 2021 • Solo
The Fish Market has nothing spectacular unless one wants to buy fresh fish. The place is too crowded, very noisy and vendors can easily cheat you to buy fish that are not fresh. After the recent experience where I got cheated on the quality of fish, I have decided not to go here again.

Must See
Sep 2020 • Solo
This is a must see if you have the stomach for it. I think this is a very important place in the city you see the fisherman and crew bringing the days catch from boat to market. There is also kitchens to cook the food. It is a very interesting place to see.

I’m a big market fan, so keep that in mind. However, I loved this place. Fishermen landing on the beach and flogging their catch. Traders furiously buying at auction. I loved it. It’s pretty full-on (even at 1pm) and it’s very much a local, working market. The array of sea food was fantastic and I’m sure you could get stuff cheaply if you’re willing to engage in some bartering.

Literally couldn’t get out of the van because of the smell....I’m not high maintenance and I’m all about experiencing new exciting environments but just couldn’t make it out of the van.

FRESH OFF THE BOATS
Jun 2019 • Friends
Pictures of the famous Kivukoni Fish Market, in the same area where you get the ferry to Zanzibar. Hoping to be back in December for Zanzibar. This market is an experience indeed. The smell is overwhelming, but not bad enough to put me off seafood. Everything is freshly caught and sold right there. You can have your food cooked at a smaller market across the road. I couldn't believe how cheap it is. I bought a whole White Snapper Fish, a Crab and loads of Prawns for $17. Crazy.

Awesome Seafood Market
Jun 2019 • Business
There is a lot to experience their especially during the morning time when the market is active, that is the time fishermen bring more fishes to the market from the ocean, not only in the morning that boats arrive with fishes even in the evening but mostly the market is busiest in morning, their you can experience the aggressive bargaining, fish auction, the place where will see a lot of ocean fish like crab, octopus, prawns, lobster, calamari, king fish, shrimps and not only fish but also other sea products like shells, you can buy fish at a reasonable price as it is much cheaper than anywhere else in Dar Es Salaam.

When you buy fish the vendors can cook for you and eat on the spot but there will be extra charges to fry. But you can buy also already prepared ready for selling. Expect the smell of the fried fishes all over the place and don’t blame anyone, for fish lovers I believe smell will not bother them, the smell itself is the experience. It’s better to have a local person or guide to show you all three separated sections of the market and learn a lifestyle of people working there will get a lot of information. Please before you take a photo ask the permission to avoid unnecessary quarrels with locals.

Fresh Seafood Delight
Apr 2019 • Friends
If you love seafood as much as I do - then this place would be heavenly to visit. First of all - before going to the actual market for fresh fish, right across the street, they have a section of the market where they fry and cook the seafood for customers to grab a quick bite. I would recommend making a stop there first to have some fried fish, squid and calamari among other things. The tomato dip they make is everything.

The fish market with the raw seafood fresh from the ocean is a delight in its own way. Really, if someone isn't a fish enthusiast they would hate the place just from the smell of it. I loved everything about the place. The set up, the vendors, the smells, the business. It was all riveting!

Their prices are reasonable. We had one of the locals take us around and we indulged in different types of sea food - including jumbo prawns, crabs, mussels, calamari, king fish, king prawns etc.

I would recommend wearing decent clothing and packed shoes - especially if you don't want fish poop in your flip-flops or sandals.

Worth it for those interested in authentic local life
Feb 2019 • Couples
If you like to see local people's real life, this is a place to visit. The fish market is authentic and not touristy at all. It may be a bit smelly, but it's very interesting. In each of its sections, a different activity happens: some of them cut, others clean, some others cook and so on. There is also the auction, that happens all around the market if you watch it carefully (some of them are very discrete). You can also have lunch there if you like.
