Finally, after two years of closure, the oldest museum in the Arab world and Africa, the Bardo Museum, can be visited again. . Founded under French colonial rule this museum was closed during the Arab Spring. This museum has the largest collection of mosaics in the world, a guide is recommended to do the entire journey. I recommend booking it by contacting the museum directly.

I love museums, this one was ok... layout and flow was good, artifacts were sparse but there was a lot of good text (in Arabic and French).

The second exhibit focussed on the loss and desecration of historical places and artifacts. This was well put together albeit all in photographs from around the world, there was English text here.

However, what I was NOT expecting was to turn the corner and enter the most elaborate and beautiful building. Loads of typical coloured tiles and many many rooms of different purposes - glorious!

The staff were friendly and helpful. Definitely add this to your list if here for only 1 day, I went alone and it took me 90 minutes.

The Bardo houses a collection of neolithic finds, but nobody goes there to see old flint stones fragment but to see the beautifully ornamental moorish palace complex. Shame there is not much information about the people that once build it and lived in it but at least there are explanations (in french) what the rooms were used for and how the restoration was done. A must see!

I will echo what others mentioned below: unless you have an interest in archaeology/prehistory or ethnomusicology, the museum proper isn’t for you. But definitely go for the building and grounds as they have restored this to the good old days. Interesting architecture & crafts on display. An employee explained as he showed us around (in Arabic, my husband translated for me) the palace. The actual museum held displays on the prehistory of Algeria & musical instruments from Africa. The display descriptions are in Arabic & French. The admission charge is no longer free: it was 200 DA (approximately US $1.80).

Pleasant museum mostly because of its location and scenario with great garden areas. The museum lacks modern signage but holds an interesting collection of North African art work

To be honest, I found the exhibits in this museum a little underwhelming. However, the building itself is beautiful and the gardens are very peaceful. Well worth a visit.
