My family has visited the High Trestle Trail Bridge over the Des Moines River twice. The highlight of the 25-mile trail is the former railroad bridge built in 1913 was converted to a bicycle bridge in 2011. According to wikipedia.com "The 13-story (40-meter) high and nearly half-mile (770-meter) long trestle bridge provides scenic views of the Des Moines River Valley".

The High Trestle Trail is a paved, multi use trail in central Iowa that runs through multiple counties and towns, it is not exclusive to Ankeny and shouldn;t be listed as such. For that matter, the highlight of the trail, and truly an internationally known landmark isa the High Trestle Bridge, which is on the Boone County portion of trail,... More

Directions were a little confusing so hope this helps. Drive to Madrid, a small town a short distance from Ankeny. Follow HWY 210, follow signs to parking, walk to bridge. It's about a one mile hike if you just want to see the bridge and not bike or hike the total length of the trail. This is an artsy type... More

My wife & I rode from the trailhead in Woodard to Ankeny & back. Great facility at the trailhead to both change at & clean up. There was were also tools & an air pump there. What a wonderful surface to ride on. Both the concrete & the asphalt was smooth. We did encounter wind during the first leg of... More

Even if you can't pedal you can ride. This was a great way to visit the High Trestle Trail. Rent your bike from Trailside Rental in Madrid located on Second Street.

Who knew that a bridge could be artistic? This is just beautiful. Be sure to ride at dusk, and take good lights for your bike. We rode both in the evening and during the day, and each time was great. We can't wait to go back.

Although the ride was 52 miles round trip for me the High Trestle Trail is a very nice ride for oneself or for the family.

My wife and I rode the trestle twice as part of the Midwest Tandem Rally. The Friday evening ride was from the Madrid trailhead/parking area - about a 5 mile, relatively flat, round trip. We were there to see the lights come on at dusk. Really cool. Bike lights are necessary since there were lots of pedestrians in dark clothing.... More

It was a pretty spring day - there were a lot of people out and about. It's kind of strenuous if you are doing a round trip. One side is at quite a long incline. Very scenic and cool when it's lit up at night.
