The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels where you’re treated to a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side with sweeping views of Kaneohe, Kaneohe Bay and Kailua. It’s also well known for strong tradewinds, forming a natural wind tunnel of sorts. It was here in 1795 that Kamehameha The Great conquered the island of Oahu in one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history. Led by Kalanikupule, the defenders of Oahu were driven back up into the valley where they were trapped above the cliff. More than 400 of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge of the cliff to their deaths 1,000 feet below.

Take the old Pali road, spectacular drive on a rainforest road! and soon you’ll be at the historic outlook where history of Hawaii was written! Besides that, of course a wonderful view to the windward side of the island!

You can either drive or walk up there. We chose the easy way. This is our must go location. The view is so gorgeous, rain or shine.

It is just a lookout. Swing by on your way somewhere nearby and get a quick pic. Must pay for parking though you'll only be here about 15-20 mins. Not sure I would deliberately drive here only.

Parking here is terrible! I ended up running up to take a few pictures and getting back to the car before it had even gotten to turn into the parking lot. The views are amazing, though.

A Great place for awesome views. Free parking and access. There are some trails that go off on to some other great views as well.

Even in the rain this viewpoint is beautiful. The clouds move quickly on the windward side of the island this continually changing what we could see.

The Pali lookout is driving distance from the Waikiki Beach area, so Uber (unless you have a car) is the best option. We've heard about the strong wind (trade wind?) but the ferocity was experienced when we're at the top of the lookout! OMG! Almost...More

Drive the Pali highway when you head to the north shore and you will want to stop at the lookout with the most beautiful views of Honolulu. Keep a watch for the turn-off because it is easy to miss. It is usually very windy, so...More

We have never used Uber, but the Lookout is just a short drive from Honolulu, up the Pali Highway. Even if you rent a car for just one day, it's worth it to drive from Honolulu to Kailua (great state beach park there) via... More

I think it's just an "honor system" to pay if you decide to stop, park your car and walk up to the overlook. No charge for just driving through.
