The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels where you’re treated to a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side with sweeping views of Kaneohe, Kaneohe Bay and Kailua. It’s also well known for strong tradewinds, forming a natural wind tunnel of sorts. It was here in 1795 that Kamehameha The Great conquered the island of Oahu in one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history. Led by Kalanikupule, the defenders of Oahu were driven back up into the valley where they were trapped above the cliff. More than 400 of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge of the cliff to their deaths 1,000 feet below.

Beautiful views! It's just a lookout spot with nothing else to do, no bathrooms either, and parking is $3, but the view definitely makes up for what it's lacking! 😉 Please help keep these places beautiful by taking out what you bring in!

The history of this lookout is very interesting. Well worth reading about it while you are there. The high winds make this stop unforgettable.

I wouldn't make a special trip to see this lookout, however if you're on your way past then it's worth stopping and having a look.

This was my second time here, first time was in 2010. It's easy to find, costs $3 to park your car, and very well worth it. You're almost a 1,000 feet up and have incredible views. Immediately below you is a thick jungle like canopy...More

An easy drive and not too far to walk to see some truly amazing views. It *is* pretty windy though and I wish I had tied my long hair back as it went all over the place! Having said that it was lovely to cool...More

We heard about this spot from a friend. It was easy to drive to and an easy walk to the lookout point. We were not disappointed with the views.

This is a beautiful sight ! it is also an historical place were some battle occurs during the 16-17 century, between different island tribes. It was very windy and a jacket could be good.

I'd been here about fifteen years ago and I remember thinking it was pretty impressive then but the day had been overcast and so it wasn't really the best time to go. This time it was sunny and clear and really showed off the scenery...More

No admission charge, but they do charge for parking. Also do not leave your valuables in the car.
