Strong hands, friendly, clean, simple and not overpriced. Massages are personal taste so writing a review about the massage itself would not be of much value. Masseuses were friendly and professional, we were happy to tip. We only did the 50 minute, they also offer 90 minutes. Of note, they did not do much with our faces, but then again, I have a short attention span and did not listen when she explained what time of massage it was. We really liked it and would return. The therapist even help alleviate some of the frozen shoulder that I have, without me pointing it out to her. I booked this couples massage for a Christmas present, definitely not worth the $400. The resort is beautiful, and the spa waiting room was nice, but there were no other amenities besides the massage. I should’ve done more research on what the day would look like.
My husbands masseuse was apparently magical in his feet, except that each time she walked, her shoes stuck and squeaked, making it hard to relax. My massage was ok, he didn’t really hear me when I asked him to focus on my feet the most, followed by my back.
Don’t bother with the “sounds of the ocean with cool breeze rooms” - all you will hear is pool noise with Sheraton guests yelling at the kids.
Overall, disappointing when you can’t really relax.

This is not an actual spa experience. There was no steam room, sauna or even bathrobes given, let alone a place to shower prior to my massage. My masseuse was wonderful but that’s about it. Don’t waste your money and go elsewhere. How disappointing!

Snorkeling here was great...clear...lots of fish...but please beware of the rip current that is at the tip and back side of Black Rock... I was having a wonderful day and got caught up in the excitment...then I began to swim back to shore and could not get around the bend...with out getting into too many of the details...I almost lost my life that day...it was by far the scariest event of my life...so PLEASE look at the flags that they post at the beach....if you see a red flag....BEWARE...and be safe

My son drowned and died, jumping off Black Rock. He was brought back to life after being dead for 6 minutes. He survived but others are not so lucky, so please don't do it. Beautiful to look at, but that's it. Leave it to the professionals, it is NO joke!!!!

I saw another review claiming this same thing and thought it was worth sharing.
If you are on the north side of black rock there is some decent snorkling along the rock facing the beach. It's highly recommended to avoid going around the corner. It is only deep water and sand and can be a very strong current at times.
The sun broke out and the weather got pretty great, so my step brother and I decided to scout around the corner to see if there was anymore snorkling to be had. No flags or indicators were out at this time. Once we got around the corner we swam maybe 100 feet along the cove area, past that outlet, and decided there wasn't anything to be seen here but deep water and sand. We decided to return back to the north side of the rock. By this point the weather took a turn for the worse and the wind started to pick up pretty significantly (blowing south to southwest). The wind was blowing against us. As we were swimming we noticed we were making very little to no progress, essentially swimming in place. I exhausted all of my effort and at this point figured out I couldn't make it back. My brother in law fortunately was able to make it after about 10 minutes of swimming. Once i saw he made it to the corner I saw him calling for help. At this point I was exhausted and decided to let the current take me wherever it was headed. Around the corner is essentially a little cove, with two points and a cliff where a hotel sits. I eventually made it a bit further south to this other southern point. I timed the waves and was able to find a small opening to climb up the other rock point. Fortunately for me I am pretty active so climbing it was possible. I got pretty cut up in the process. I then found a path leading up this sharp cliff ledge and jumped a fence into a hotel. At this point I saw the rescue team down there to get me out of the water. By the end of the ordeal I just had some cuts on my hands and feet.
I thought it was worth sharing my story since there are no signs that indicate warnings for this area. On a sunny calm day, this likely wouldn't have been a problem. But please take caution when snorkling or swimming in this area!

Thank you Kathleen C for your review on May 13. Your 911 call was for my husband. He was a very strong swimmer and an experienced snorkeler. Obviously a dangerous area. I did research on the area to see if it was safe and everything LOCAL indicated it to be safe. This was our dream vacation and I lost my true love at Black Rock.

Read that this was a great snorkel spot in a guide book that was in our condo we had rented. Wished I had had the opportunity to read reviews on here before venturing out ourselves. As with most comments here it seems this place can be pretty hit or miss. The day we went it was completely a miss and almost the last day of our life.
We got here around 9 am and parked in the hotel’s parking lot ($20) – not a great start to the day. After a short walk to the beach which was already quite crowded, we found a small section of available sand real estate and set up our towels. When walking into the water you only get about 2 ft. in and then there’s a big drop off and I was no longer able to stand. We set out on our snorkel and went further and further out in search of fish. The few fish we did come across were all black and not exciting in the least. Continuing to snorkel and follow everyone else, we found ourselves around the corner from black rock still seeing close to nothing. Disappointed we stated to head back in, or so we tried to. There is an incredibly strong current at the bend of Black Rock and by the time we had decided to turn back we were starting to tire. You swim for what seems an eternity and don’t make any progress which then makes you start to panic. I ended up getting help from a man that kindly got me around the bend and out of the current but even then it’s a long swim back to shore which you have no energy for. I was still making my back in when all of a sudden people at the point started screaming towards shore for help and yelling for someone with a paddleboard to get over there as someone else was tiring out and starting to drown.
It’s shocking that there aren’t more signs or warnings on this beach. We didn’t see any flags and considering the current is so strong, there should be lifeguards or life preservers over by the rock. Instead, you rely on the kindness of strangers and the hotel staff that rent out the paddle boards for any rescue situations.
Considering the snorkeling here is so hit or miss, it’s not worth risking your life. Maluaka beach in Makena is far safer and there are tons of turtles and tropical fish to be seen from a much safer distance from land and with no rip current to contend with.

My husband and I just came back from our honeymoon. On our last day in Maui,(8/19/2016) we decided to go snorkeling at Black Rock since it was recommended by a few people we had met on our trip (locals and vacationers). We swam out and at first everything was great, water looked fairly calm, then we passed the rock where there is a channel and all of a sudden I realized that the current was too strong. I'm a decent swimmer and I couldn't move far in any direction! I may have been able to get to the rock to hang on (although I'm not certain) but I didn't want to leave my husband who was struggling. He was being brought out to sea. I told him not to panic and also telling myself that. When I realized that this was a life or death situation, I started yelling for help. People who happened to be up on the rock were instructing us to swim parallel but we couldn't move at all and I was trying to prevent my husband from being swept out with a flimsy 'noodle'. He was already taking in some water (he also had a noodle). I was panicking for his sake at this point screaming 'HELP'! There happened to be a family nearby (on the other side of the rock- the calmer part) who heard my screams. They had a boogie board. They swam to us and we grabbed on to the board. It was a man, woman and a younger woman who came to our rescue. The woman ended up leaving to swim to the rock because of the current, she hung on to this hanging rope there and had to be rescued by someone else. We were then guided by a security guard named Kalei from a resort up on the rock. It took a while for all 4 of us clinging to this 1 board, to get to safety even going with the current. We got to the other side of Black Rock and Kalei pulled us up the rock to safety (mind you the waves were now rough and we were all scraped up from being pushed into the rock. These people saved our lives, We were extremely lucky that day and we owe everything to them. So to Cesar, EsBecka and Kalei- we owe everything to you. We will 'Pay It Forward'.
My suggestion to people going there- wear a life jacket while snorkeling. It's no joke! People have died there. I hope this post will help save a life.

This is my second time to BlackRock at the Sheraton and I am an experienced swimmer and snorkeler. Unfortunately we witnessed a middle-aged man pulled from the water yesterday which was disheartening as he died while snorkeling some distance around the corner of Black Rock. So here is what's important to know about Black Rock. One, they do not have lifeguards on the beach or on the rock. I asked at the Sheraton and was appalled that there were no lifeguards on the beach or in front of Black Rock to watch the hotel guests who think it is a good idea to swim far out or snorkel without a buddy. Secondly, you have to use good judgement. The initial 50 meters at Black Rock is safe for children to snorkel. The tide can move quickly but for the most part there are lots of fish to see close to the beach in 10 feet of water. It is a beautiful place of nature. The further out you go, you need to be very careful as the tide can change quickly and it can be become dangerous. It looks like there are a few accidents and a death here every year and if you think it is a smart idea to swim alone further around black rock point or snorkel alone and without a life vest unless you are an advanced scuba diver, well think again. I am shocked that the Sheraton does not have a sign outlining the recommended rules for a safe swim or snorkel. There are signs closer to the rocks but nothing that let's swimmers and snorkelers know the specific risks and recommendations especially that they do not have life guards on site. The man who was pulled from the water yesterday was seen afar from the hotel staff and lifeguards from another beach area came over by jet ski to pick him up along with the hotel cabana staff who pitched in to help out. I asked the hotel staff and they said they do not have life guards and you must swim at your own risk. This is not enough of an answer for me and I believe the Sheraton must address this issue at once. I rate the experience as terrible but the attraction as worth visiting with precaution to holiday swimmers and beginning snorkelers.

What are the spa amenities? Does the spa have a pool or hot tub separate from the rest of the hotel? Sauna? Steam room?

Yes it is the rock is very rough getting there you can swim to it also. I seen little kids jumping off the rock with no problem

Is it difficult to snorkel around black rock? Do you have to be an experienced swimmer?

Generally speaking, a novice could snorkel here. The depth changes slowly and for the most part, there is no current due to its proximity to the rock ledge. HOWEVER, those adventurous types who head out past the end of the point can at times be pulled on by a pretty good current...nothing that can not be overcome, but for those who panic easily or are not comfortable with their snorkeling skills, it could be scary.

It is shallow at some spots but not at the snorkeling spots its shallow for adults but kids can touch it if they can swim good and hold there breath good

The last time we visited Maui was in 1990, the year I learned to surf. After that we have always stayed where we could surf the north and south shores of Oahu. We will be back at the Mahina Surf on Jan 10 2016 for our 5th visit. Love the place. Which hotel has Valet Parking the closest to Black Rock snorkeling? Thank you so much. See you in January.

My husband have been to Maui several times. We are wondering if it is possible to walk from The Mahana, past Black Rock and the Sheraton to the Whaler's Village? We've made the trek several times, but can't figure out how to go beyond Black Rock from The Mahana side to the Sheraton side. Please advise. Thanks so much.

I stayed at the Sheraton but you can park at whalers village for cheap and it's a 5 minute walk to black rock.
