- actranslationRedmond, Washington124 contributionsGo. Just go.We were staying on the north shore, so this was a bit of a trek on what promised to be a hot day--but it was clear. It was stunning! And notably cooler and comfortable. Many accessible walks up to viewing areas that provided a spectacular view both to the south and to the north, mountains and waterfalls. Make sure you have plenty of photo storage and full batteries. We took the advice of others here to get an early start, and even then parking was a bit of a challenge. The good news is that turnover in the parking lots is fairly quick, so we always found a spot. Parking is $10 per car, plus $5 per person, payable by card only. The ticket is valid all day. Many people packed a picnic and enjoyed the many shade picnic areas scattered around the park. They're smart, since you will want to spend more time here than you originally thought. You may think you don't need sunscreen because you're only out of the car for 15 minutes at a time, but you're wrong. Slather it on, and reapply every hour or so over midday.Visited March 2023Written 20 March 2023
- robcauDenver, Colorado22 contributionsIt's worth the drive!!!!The road from Waimea up through Waimea Canyon and Koke'e parks is fantastic. Be sure to drive all the way to the end to get to Kalalau lookout. The views are incredible. Along the way, be sure to stop at all the official (and unofficial...as in the side of the road) other lookouts. We spent about 3.5 hours total including lunch at the Koke'e lodge round trip from Waimea and it was worth every second. Try to go on a dry day (or in the morning) when there are less clouds.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 July 2023

A little steep to walk up to the main lookout, but it's smooth and very doable for a 68 year old with a bad knee!! It was clear, and we couldn't tell where the sky ended and the water began.

It's a must stop if you visit the canyon park. A very short walk from the parking lot to the view point. You could see the green cliffs and the beach even though it's far away.

I'm giving this 5 stars because I think the view would be breathtaking but the day we took the drive in Waimea Canyon, Kalalau lookout was completely socked in. It was still pretty cool to be up in the clouds. We were fortunate enough to do a helicopter tour a couple days prior so saw it by air and it was stunning. It was the only place that was cloud covered in the Waimea/Koke'e State park drive so you may not know until you get there - so just go!

Have been there before but this time there is a hefty fee for parking and entry. The lookout is a 15 minute thing. Either it is clear and you take some pictures or it is socked in with clouds and there is nothing to see. There are no activities here. To be more likely to get a good view arrive there before 10AM.
The parking fee now is $10 per car PLUS $5 per person. That is ridiculous for a 15 minute "view". I will likely not go back again.
Later in the visit to Kauai a local told me that it is for all park spots and not just the one and is good for the whole day. A bit better but still very steep.

Just further up from the valley and worth visiting. Beautiful views and nice area for lunch before heading back down to the town.

What trails did you hike?

We did the Canyon trail. It was moderate, not easy. There are places where it’s a little steep and slippery. There were times when I wondered what the heck I was doing. But once it was over, I realized it was not that long and it was not that bad. I’m glad I did it. But I would think it’s best when there hasn’t been any recent rain. You can look up more info about that trail. It’s very popular. Now that I know what to expect, I would do it again !

Yes it is. We were to do it in December 2017, but forecast had said rain. We drove to the North shore to do beaches instead and it didn't rain till afternoon, but it was too late for us to do to the beach at the 2 mile mark because it was late am and we only had sandals when we thought maybe we'd try a bit of it. Then we discovered there are huge boulders starting out for quite a distance and figured if it were to rain and we had to head back early then it would be very treacherous. I don't know if the trail is still open to hike since the flooding in spring 2018 wiped out the roads after hanalei bay towards the trail. I was there in June 2018 and only locals could go past hanalei bay. Single road highway up to there. The lookout I got to see was from the other side by Kokee and Waimea canyon.
