We found this by accident as we were taking a back road from Poipu to Lihue. It has amazing history and legend. Folklore says it was originally built by the mythical Menehune people of Hawaii. It was used by Hawaiians to catch and cultivate fish. It's not as visually stunning as other things on Kauai, but certainly interesting.

This pond was built nearly 1,000 years ago and since 1973 has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Ponds like these were built to catch fish. Legend has it, this pond was constructed in one night by the mythical Menehune. There is a nice view of the fishpond and surrounding mountains from the viewpoint, which is located... More

Saw this from the air on various helicopter tours, but never took the time to go and find it. It was worth the trip, when you read the story behind it. This was one of the earliest cases of Aquaculture where the ancient Hawaiians raised fish. Beautiful view and great story.

It's pretty much just a roadside stop with a placard and its story. If in the area it might be worth a visit. There are nice views and the pond's history is interesting. There are no trails to access the pond. The closest you can get to it is to kayak or paddle board the river adjacent to it.

This was quite off the beaten path and not especially walkable, but the history was very interesting to me, and the view from the lookout is gorgeous!

Only minutes from Lihue. The overlook from Hulemalu Road is excellent. Do your read-up on this fish pond, built nearly 1000 years ago. Worth a detour....

The only thing interesting about this site is the one sign telling about a bit of Hawaiian history...a very small bit. Forgettable

A mildly interesting stop while on the island. There is an observation area above the fishpond that has a placard explaining how it was made. The legend states that the little people made it in one night 1000 years ago. Worth stopping while in the area and I am glad we saw it however one of the lesser cool things... More

The fish ponds are part of the Kauai history and if you're in Lihue or heading south, you should take the extra time to drive a few miles. The scenic bluff has awesome views of the mountains, river and fish pond and there's information to read about the history and culture.

The Menehune Fish Pond is viewable from a roadside pullover. The pullover area appeared more quickly than we expected it to be, and we had to do a U-turn to go back to it. The scenic view is lovely. We rate it average, though, comparing it to other scenic places on Kauai that are very good/excellent, (e.g. Waimea Canyon &... More
