Stopped by while on vacation and enjoyed the walk through a spooky forest, over lava flows and finally to the petroglyphs. Try to go in the morning or late afternoon when the shadows show the ancient rock art better and it is not so hot.

Extensive petroglyphs await you at the end of an .8 mile trail. Trail is flat, but rocky in parts with close over-hanging branches. Well worth the hour or so it takes round trip.

About a 1.7 mile hike over rough terrain. There are a bunch of what we believe to be fake petroglyphs from previous tourists carved into the rocks when you walk in. Don’t look as old and aren’t really weathered like the real ones. Bring water...More

We were really glad we did this free and interesting outing during our time on the Big Island. We were staying at the Fairmont Orchid, so it was an easy walk to get to the parking lot of the park. From the parking lot, there's...More

This is very easy to access. We went after 5 pm, so the sun was on its way down. I wouldn't recommend going at the height of the day, as it was still radiating heat even when we went. There was no one else exploring,...More

If you take it for what it is, this is a pretty cool and easy excursion. Walk along and look at carvings in the rocks from 100’s of years ago. I enjoyed the nice walk and a brief look into the past of how things...More

We arrived around 5pm, so it was much cooler and the walk was more bearable. We had our toddler with us, but he definitely wasn't able to negotiate the rocky walk, with lots of tree roots sticking out. Our other kids had a great time,...More

When you first arrive at the parking lot, there is a bathroom area, and access to a beach path. At 1st we just went to the beach area, where there were lots of other people walking and looking for the petroglyphs. Little did we know...More

The good news is that getting to a few petroglyphs on display near the parking lot is super easy, and it's free. They are gathered together in one place a very short walk from the beach parking area. We walk by it often on our...More

Great short outing but go early or late...not in the middle of the day. It is a gentle walk but a bit rugged. Gets hot in the mid day. Lovely little beach picnic area with easy parking is a bonus!

It is walkable but a hot and not that scenic walk on the road. You can make a shorter and scenic 15 minute walk along the shoreline north and get to Holoholokai Beach Park. The petroglyph trail is off the parking lot on... More
