Located at the Courthouse in downtown Athens. This one of a kind cannon is interesting. The plaque tells you what you need to know. This is something you can walk to while wandering around downtown. 5 minutes time, unless kids want pictures.

It's a cannon. My husband is jazzed about it because it's double-barrled, but I'm like...it didn't ever work *because* it's double-barreled so....Hooray for a weapon that never worked? But my husband is excited about and thinks it's a neat piece of history, so I guess it depends on the viewer. :)

This is the best double barreled cannon I've ever seen. That said it's also the only one. It's a cannon in front of city hall. You can probably spend all of 15 minutes looking at it if you take your time. It's a neat thing to see and a cool part of history, just make sure you have other plans... More

For the life of me I can't understand why this double barreled cannon is listed as an attraction. You take a look at it and wonder how it could every work. Beyond that, there's not much to say about it. There are many more interesting things to do in Athens than to spend time "viewing" this. But, if you are... More

While not being a great artistic masterpiece, The Double Barreled Cannon is worth a trip and photo. Its great location by City Hall always makes a good photo. Put the photo in with your others of Downtown Athens and the colorful bulldawgs, heck, even throw in some of the locally painted fire hydrants and you have a local art folder... More

I guess you could file this under "It sounded good at the time..." A double-barrelled cannon designed to do what you would think--fire 2 cannonballs at once. However, they decided it would be a good idea to connect the 2 with a chain--wrong! The trick was to get the two barrels to fire at the same time and apparently that... More

The double barreled canon is located downtown at the city hall. It is a quick tour stop around Athens. The story is interesting, good idea but didn't work out very well. Take a walk around downtown and check it out.

from late unpleasantness but i think it was a failed experiment. the idea was to put a cannon ball attached by a long chain in each barrel and fire them both at the same time in an attempt to cut a swath of yankees off at the pass. i don't think it was ever attempted and failed. ever since i... When I was a journalism student at UGA, I wrote a story for the Athens City magazine about this cannon. It was invented by a Confederate loyalist during the Civil War. In theory, it was supposed to fire two cannonballs simultaneously. The balls were linked by a chain that supposedly would mow down the advancing Union troops. But in testing... More
