The space littered with stelae and altars between Temples I and II on the east-west axis and between the North Acropolis and the place complex on the north-south axis is the Great Plaza, or the new downtown of Tikal because it was built relatively late in its history. What most visitors don't realize is that this plaza is built on a platform that's at least 4 meters high, and from this platform rise the temples and palaces around.
The Great Plaza is a must-see for anyone visiting Tikal. Make sure to check the acoustics, but don't just clap. Stand in the middle of the plaza and face directly at the temple I, then the North Acropolis, then Temple 2. Each one will echo your clap.

The "Great Plaza" of the largest ever Mayan city! According to archaelogical records, "Tikal" has been inhabited since the 6th BC and, at its peak, over 90,000 persons lived here! One can imagine this beautiful square, flanked by the iconics "Temple I" and "Temple II", by the royal residential palaces and by the many stelae and ceremonial altars, crowded by the local population on their daily tasks! Just amazing! At any visit to "Tikal", the "Great Square" cannot be missed - an outstanding complex of buildings and public spaces, offering fantastic picture opportunities! Fond memories to take home! Enjoy!

This plaza is core to the site. Many of the most interesting buildings surround it. Do spend a bit of time here

The Great Plaza holds Temple I and II, as well as other structures and it is an impressive area. It was a perfect spot for us to have lunch after our guided tour of the complex. Note it is still a good 20min or so from here to the exit and something to bear in mind if you are aiming to catch a bus at a particular time.

The most impressive place at the ruins. Climb to the top of the temple to get a great view. Nice place to stop and rest and have lunch if you brought it.
