While lodged in Antigua, we went to Lake Atitlán for a day trip with a tour guide and driver recommended by our hotel. The trip takes exactly 2 1/2 hours on a typical Central American highway which is somewhat curved in certain parts and where...More

This lake is a collapsed caldera much like Crater Lake in Oregon. It has beautiful clear, blue water surrounded by several volcanoes and beautiful topography. There are several native villages around the lake that can be reached by catching 'taxi boats'. These cost about 25...More

Soulfully beautiful lake, volcanoes, sunrises, sunsets, jungle, birds, skies, rocks, locals, flowers, trees and clouds. It is the most beautiful place I've ever been! The lake itself however is toxic--don't drink the water. Sending prayers for its healing.

We did a one-day trip to the Lake from Antigua in a collective van. We had a tour guide, who took us to three villages by boat (plus the departure village). Each stop was rather quick, but we saw some interesting sights -- a women...More

You can visit in one rapid day or stay for a week. You can backpack on the cheap or stay in relatively inexpensive luxury by US standards at the Hotel Atitlan or another inside Panajachel. The boat trips can be confusing, especially when there is...More

Five days on the lake is a good amount of time. Panajachel is easily the biggest town. It has the most restaurants and shopping, but I enjoy staying in one of the smaller towns. The boats to and from the villages are very... More
