Visitors who have seen a lot of colonial Baroque will be disappointed--there is no Baroque architecture in Guatemala City. The city only came into its own when the government was moved here after the massive earthquake of 1773 that leveled Antigua. But this neo-classical cathedral,...More

Enjoyed going in this Cathedral. Quite beautiful inside. Doesn't have the degree of decoration that the European churches do, because the gold was all taken out of the country rather than being used within. Still a very nice building to visit, especially on a rainy...More

The church building is awesome as is the market in front of the church. The facility is huge, and there is a Mass multiple times during the day. The architecture of the building is classic and very old. Plan to spend time inside to study...More

Attended the anniversary celebration of the martyrdom of Bishop Juan José Gerardi Conedera. The spirit of the mass came through clearly despite my meager Spanish. The cathedral is filled with life - not an empty vessel like so many such structures in the world.

We have visited this cathedral several times since we have been here in Guatemala. This church contains numerous paintings depicting the life of Christ which are very old. The church itself is well preserved and maintained. It is located at the main square of the...More

We loved the cathedral and the whole experience around the visit. I mean, there was nothing particularly interesting or different about it. But the feel of "old church" just makes you love the place. Beware of pick pockets, area around it is not very safe.

Church is absolutely breath taking. You must go in to experience the beauty of the statues. Holy Week was breath taking.

The church was built in 1535 and is in good repair. Be sure to walk around to get be able to take it all in. The paintings, while in a bit of poor repair are still beautiful, along with all the wood and stone work.

The Cathedral itself is supposed to be open daily, including weekends, from 7 AM to 1 PM and from 3 PM to 7 PM. But my cab driver warned me that often it is closed during those hours for no apparent reason. When I visited... More
