If you like to visit emblematic places, the Metropolitan Cathedral is a place to go. Colonial period sacred paintings and sculptures are found here. This sober style building is a fine example of the architecture in the historic center of Guatemala City.

This lovely Cathedral is of course on the main plaza. There is an area out front where you can donate a coat, or take a coat if you need one. The handicrafts market is just behind the cathedral. In front of the cathedral and towards the southwest is a walking street, with live entertainment.

This beautiful cathedral was not far from the market that was in the center of the city. While we were there, I noticed curtains, flags, rugs that were all purple and looked brand new. I asked our travel guide about it and he said every season, the churches change the color of their accessories, take the previous ones down and... More

Downtown Guatemala has to be the best area for touristing in the capital city. Its full of small bars and restaurants. Ask your driver to get you to the Sexta or sixth avenue, which is a peatonal street, and walk all the way to the central square where the Catedral is. You'll have a nice walk, see the surroundings and... More

We happened to visit the cathedral on a day when a lot of children were taking their holy communions. Nice to see the Mayan take on the communion outfit! Amusingly, they had put a Disney princess face on the virgin for them. A nun was handing out miraculous medals to everyone walking through the door. According to my friend, some... More

The earthquake of 1773 destroyed the capital of Guatemala, Santiago de Los Caballeros (now Antigua Guatemala). The colonial authorities decided to move in a more peaceful place and founded a new capital, Guatemala Ciudad. Looking ahead to say that in the new place of the capital was shaking badly. The city centre was to become the new Cathedral - a... More

Good place to take great photos, of a notably neoclassical style is the most important religious building in the capital.

Very impressive cathedral, right in the heart of the city, but perhaps not as ornate inside as one would expect from the imposing architecture. Well worth a visit.
