What a stunningly beautiful place! We came with Seahorse Dive Shop for the day to snorkel, and wow! After the 12 mile, 45 minute (very bumpy!) boat ride to the caye, we set up under the large covered area and received a briefing from the park ranger. The caye is a World Heritage Site and is protected accordingly. There are restroom facilities and a small gift shop. You can swim off the beach in the crystal-clear waters. We snorkeled off the back of the island with our guide and saw many fish, lobsters, and colorful coral, though no larger sea creatures. I’m not sure I’ve ever been anywhere more beautiful!

My husband and two teen-aged daughters spent the day relaxing on Laughing Bird Caye. It is a quintessential island paradise and I highly recommend a trip to visit. We snorkeled right from the shore. This is a great place for beginning snorkelers and even young kids! We traveled to the island with Captain Jak's tour. Our snorkeling guide, Moses, and captain, Nelson were excellent, excellent, excellent. They helped to make it a prefect day!

My son and I wanted to to Laughing Bird and/or Silk Cayes. Could not book just two persons. I can understand a boat not having space to accommodate a group, but to refuse 2 people makes no sense. This seems to be the policy throughout Placencia. This is their main attraction and they push people away? Will never return there.

We took a boat ride with The Splash tours. The island itself is idyllic. Think swaying palm trees, soft sand, turquoise water. If Robinson Crusoe were stranded here he would have no desire to leave. There is one bathroom on the island, and no food available unless you or your tour guide brings it. The guys at Splash in Placencia did a fantastic job with our snorkeling, then grilled lunch for our group.

This UNESCO Heritage protected site is an absolute gem! The ranger provided a comprehensive briefing about the island, its history and park regulations. The reef area was beautiful - our guide Martin showed us large crabs, lobsters, pufferfish, Blue Tangs in crystal clear water . . . the list goes on. Best snorkel we had on the island - perfect weather as well!

We loved our snorkeling trip to Laughing Bird Caye. Beautiful beach and clear water. A great place to try out snorkeling for the first time for kids - our 9, 11 and 13 yr olds loved it!

We had an ok day but I’ll blame it on the weather. It was rather choppy so we swallowed lots of salt water. My kids did not enjoy it because the rough water scared them. Again, not the fault of the tour company. The bathroom, outhouse, on the island was pretty rough but it’s a remote tiny island with no utilities so shouldn’t expect much.

Easy commute from Placencia and the island is idyllic! We used Go Sea tours and they provided lunch and plentiful rum punch. Our snorkel guide was friendly and let us go at our own pace. It may have helped that this was during the height of Covid because we had the guide and the island to ourselves.

A great example of what national parks should be like. Pristine waters surrounding a nice sandy beach Caye. Live in ranger will give you a 10-minute talk about the island and what you can and cannot do. Bathrooms on the island along with a large picnic shelter. Snorkeling around the Caye was excellent. Do what the ranger says, and this reef should stay healthy. Please do not touch the coral and wear reef safe sunscreen. Places as nice as this are disappearing all too quickly.

Make sure you have your booking contact watch the weather so you have a good ride out and back. The facilities are good and tours are served lunch.
The corals on the reef are varied and amazing especially since many are grown and transplanted due to a hurricane wiping the island clean a number of years ago. You'll see many colorful species of fishes up close.

We are in Belize and can go snorkeling at Laughingbird Caye or Silk Caye. Not sure which to choose. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Should we buy tickets in advance? Bring our own snorkel gear? We will be there April 6. Best guides for inexperienced? Prices?
Written 29 March 2019
Laughing bird was good but we enjoyed silk cay better all the guides have good equipment so I wouldn't hassle with taking gear.

Coming in from a cruise ship...we have to take a ferry from Harvest Caye and return by 5:00...Do you think we could fit this in?
Thank you
Written 12 October 2018
I’m not sure how long the ferry is but the trip from placencia is about 30 minutes so u figure 1 hour round trip, plus snorkeling both morning and afternoon, you would be done by 3 , and then leave to get back. We were back in Placencia by 3:30 at the latest

Do you have to go on a tour to get to the Caye? How much would you expect to pay?
Written 29 January 2018
Unless you had your own boat, I don't think you can get there unless you hire a local or company/tour. When I was looking at different companies, it was $75-90 per person BUT that included lunch and snorkel gear. Even if you weren't going to snorkel, it would cost the same amount as someone who didn't snorkel. Maybe you could get lucky and meet someone at the south docks to take you out there at a fraction of the cost. It is about 30-40 min boat ride going at a fairly fast clip.

What is a good tour company to use and what should I expect to pay in December?

Hi tripadvisors, I am confused. Some people say Laughing Bird Caye say has the best snorkeling ever and some say fish are actually scarce. I know the truth lies somewhere in between. But where?
Everyone who has snorkeled in other paces in the Caribbean, how would you rank Laughing Bird Caye?
BTW, we will be in Placencia in December.
Please let me know what you think.

Laughing Bird has the most amazing coral I have ever seen. I have snorkelled up and down the carribean coast. I snorkelled Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley the same week I did Laughing Bird. There were more fish up north but the coral was nothing compared to Laughing Bird. But they feed the sharks and rays at Shark Ray Alley, so there you go.
