We decided to take the drive on a whim - the 5.3 miles seem long when you don't know where you are going. I would recommend early in the day and plan on the drive plus at least an hour. It is really a great place but you do have to use your imagination a little! The crabs and lizards... More

The site is undergoing excavation and paths are narrow and not easy to navigate as there are pottery shards, shells underfoot. It's interesting but one needs to be aware there are no typical Mayan structures as in other sites. Be prepared for intense heat, humidity and mosquitos. This site is in the mangroves so bring water and bug repellant.

The Marco Gonzales Maya Site located relatively far south on the island of Ambegris Caye is probably not the most awe inspiring ruin one can visit in Belize; however, it is relatively unique. Located on the island it has a unique history but there is very little left standing above sea level. You will get a glimpse of items and... More

This is all about the experience. You hike/stroll about a mile or so through the swamp on a homemade, slightly rickety boardwalk to the site. It's legit. A real Mayan site with a few artifacts still there. The hike is an experience not to be missed. BRING THE DEET!!

You wander around the area on a self guided tour. If you are looking for lots of presentation type material this isn't the place. But you can see what is left and I found it super interesting.

We visited the Marco Gonzalez site during our stay on Ambergris Caye in mid-February. The stewards of the site, Jan Brown, Jerry and Kay were incredibly helpful and informative about the history of the site and the work they are doing to preserve the site and its artifacts. The site is 4 miles south of San Pedro near the southern... More

Some interesting mounds but since you cross a swamp to get there, also tons of bugs. We were glad to support a local cause, but this was not quite as advertised.

Not giant ruins with steps to climb, but you do trek a quarter mile on wooden planks through mangroves to get there. No kids under 5 allowed, so plan accordingly. Bring some insect repellant as well and water. It's a self guided tour that you read the signs and follow the markers. The artifacts are laying all around you and... More

4 years later for this review, my friend and I spent the day there and really enjoyed ourselves. Even though we were by ourselves, we really enjoyed all the history that we read on all the trails and paths. It was kind of humbling experience to realize how old the site is. If you love history this is a must.

Glad we went! Hard to visualize the ruins but it was very beautiful to see the jungle and where the Mayans once lived. It is quite an excursion to get to it. Very bad roads, but worth the trip
