A rocky and steep hike - at least for amateurs like us. Once we arrived at Crater Lake my youngest said, "That's it?" But we ended up hiking another mile or two past the lake. That is what made it for us. Crossed several creeks....More

Trail was harder than expected. Rather steep inclines with many, many boulders everywhere on the trail and very little shade or places to stop and catch your breath (was still getting used to Colorado altitude), but is doable for the average hiker if you take...More

I really thought this trail was going to be easier than it was. It is 3.2 Mike's straight up going over boulder rocks. The view is amazing at the top but there is really nowhere to sit except in the muddy grass. You definitely need...More

The Maroon Bells are spectacular and the hike around Maroon a lake up to the cascades is doable for almost all. If you are willing to invest another 3 hours, continue on the trail to Crater Lake. You will experience a moderate climb and a...More

Pretty easy hike to the lake if you are looking for a quick view. We got up really early and had breakfast there before the crowds. Stunning views. Would go back for a longer hike!!!

If you are going to see the famous Maroon Lake, take the extra effort to go see Crater Lake. It is an even prettier lake to see. On weekends, you will need to take the bus to get to the trail head. If you are...More

Same great views as down by Maroon Lake (Crater Lake is just a bit further up the same valley), but with far fewer people. A moderately difficult 45 minute hike, but not too terrible and definitely well worth it. Pack a lunch and make at...More

There was a lot of snow when we hiked this trail in June. The trail length is very deceiving! It seemed like we walked FOREVER to get to the lake. There were many times when we could not fully see the trail because of the...More

This was one of the most scenic hikes I have ever taken. Walking on snow and yet feeling hot in Tees. It was not a hard hike at all. You have to climb a few hundred feet so if not from Colorado, pace yourself breathing....More

This was one of the many trails that we hiked. The trail was in good condition and there were great views. We were there in the fall to see the leaf color changes and we weren't disappointed. Late September seems to be a good choice...More

There is a parking lot at Maroon Lake. During the summer you can drive up before 8 am. After 8 am it's by bus. The hike to Crater Lake starts here. In May it took us an hour and a half because of snow.

It took us about 4 1/2 hours to make the complete circle, and we' went really slow. I think most people were completing it in around 3 hours.
