Ski magazines often rank each of Aspen's four mountains separately. This is a disservice as all four mountains are really one resort, with one ski pass and connected transportation. My guess is that they rank each mountain separateley because otherwise Aspen would be ranked #1 every year!

There is a ski mountain for everyone. Buttermilk is just excellent for beginners and low intermediates although there is limited expert terrain. Snowmass is the place for families offering something for everyone and a large amount of on-slope lodging with a small mall. Aspen highlands and Ajax mountains are for more advanced skiing.

The connecting transportaion is excellent with buses running every 15 minutes. Many lodgings such as the Limelight Lodge where we stayed (see separate review) also offer their own vans on an on-demand basis for the various mountains. One of the nice touches is the ability to leave you skis with guest services at the bottom of what ever mountain you are skiing and tell them where you will be the next day -- and your skis will automatically be there waiting for you! This is especially nice with four mountains.

We preferred staying in the town of Aspen with it's excellent restaurants and bars but you can also stay at Snowmass for a more family feeling. Technically you could stay at Highlands and Buttermilk but that is very limited.

You can drive or fly there. If you fly, you can connect thru Denver, etc. for the best fares, or treat yourself to a direct jet flight right into the Aspen complex - minutes away from any lodging you have chosen.

This is a first-class skiing destination, all the way...

Aspen Ski Co is a world class operation, with prices to match. Not for the budget traveling skier, but ideal for the ski hound with cash to spend.

There wasn't much choice but to use this company to buy ski lift tickets and lesson tickets - but they were efficient and friendly. We hired skis at Inclide - a different place to support a different business as Aspen Ski Co still had a few thousand dollars from us for lift tickets and lessons!

Buyer beware. Their return policy is pro corporate. They are exploiting customers that have well needed money. You wont get any help from the store personnel and less from anyone in a "management" role.

A really poor choice in today's economic climate.

Give your money to someone else who treats you with decency. Many of the other better quality vendors in the Snowmass Mall do not have the same rules.

Stay away from the store and Ricky.

Painful. A vanity trap; all about money. Basically hugely overcharged for the access of white river natl forest. Same hotels as every where else at 1000percent markup. The biggest rip off in the country.

Veteran got his head caught in the Ajax Gondola with his neck and head sticking outside the doors. He gopro'd it on video. There was nobody in the control shed to stop the gondola to help the guy before he took the ride up with his head and neck stuck. Ski Co took his pass because he recorded it on his helmet cam and didn't give them the video.

Trying to book lessons for my beginner kids was an experience in futility and bad advice. Not sure which was worse - having to buy a package with lift tickets were included (even though we already had them) and told to come back after skiing for a refund (really - why did we have to jump through hoops?), or my daughter being told by an Instructor at Buttermilk to enjoy her level 3 lessons at Aspen Highlands, only to go there the next day and be turned away as they don't give lessons below level 5 at Highlands. So had to rush like crazy on a shuttle bus with skis to barely make the lesson at Buttermilk.

Everything took far more effort than it does at, for instance, Deer Valley, Whistler, Vail, Snowbird - I can go on and on. The logistics at Snowmass with the divided base and mall to pick up rentals is crazy.

The peaks of Snowmass and Aspen Highlands are nice, but are equalled elsewhere.

At about $120 per day for a lift ticket, and the rest of the prices (food, drinks, parking, rentals) to match, a family of 4 can spend approx. $7,000+ for a 6-day, modest vacation while skiing the mountains of Aspen. With less than mediocre snow for the winter vacation this year, their prices went up again. Shameless!
The slopes are getting empty though, and I am hoping in a few years someone will wake up and revise the business model. How is it possible that in France or Austria, with labor cost 2x higher, energy cost 3x higher, and the ski lift networks 10 times larger, a lift ticket for 6 days can be approx. $260? I don't see anything special that would justify it, quite the contrary - as of 1/6/13 many trails remained open for the sake of statistics while being very unsafe due to lack of snow, and the food on the slopes was less than mediocre - the shocker came when we were told they couldn't serve hot soup because their lawyers wouldn't allow it!
My suggestion: take your money somewhere else, where they still believe skiing and snowboarding should be an essentially middle-class pursuit. With many places like that in Utah, Idaho, Washington state, even in Colorado (not Vail Resports!), why would anyone like to be ripped off like that? For the name, and a chance of seeing a minor celebrity?

Been coming here since 1976. Some of the best resorts in the world, thankfully all under one ticket. For size, variety, and ski school quality, it's hard to beat Snowmass. For all three factors, a reason to come here with large groups. Something for everyone. However, dramatic price increases are getting out of hand. Great place, just not sure of the value proposition these days.

Amazing and worth every penny. The organisation is excellent and teachers are brilliant. Nice small classes, equal amount of teaching and fun. A must for your trip what ever level skier you are.
