The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad is Colorado's newest train offering steam engine rides through breathtaking mountain valleys and over legendary LaVeta pass on hundreds of miles of historic rail. Excursions offer riders a trip back in time on restored passenger cars that stop at the quaint mountain town of LaVeta and hear narration of Colorado history, mining stories and catch a glimpse of wildlife--including bears!

Summer weekends brings the Mountain Rails Live summer concert series with nationally renowned acts to a boxcar stage at 9,400 ft only accessible by our train. This green location is run on solar and wind power.

Seasonal rides are available throughout the year.

I had looked forward to the Rails & Ales experience with my son. What occured was a complete and utter debacle. To keep this short, it started when we boarded the train. The railroad had switched the observation car (from the City of New Orleans train) to some car that was a broken down piece of junk. The reserved seats... More

This scenic train trip takes most of a day, with a short stop at noon for lunch. The train travels approximately 12 mph, for 64 miles. At the half way point, the train coming from the opposite side arrives at the same time, and they feed you lunch. Eat fast, use the restroom, and climb aboard with not much time.... More

Aspen changing colors provided wonderful photo opportunities. A fun train crew. Very personable. Great time.

We went on the color train. The only thing that was missing was they had to use the diesel engine. Views were great . Several stops to stretch and explore . Had the trout for lunch. It was yummy. Summerberry cake was delicious . Time in the dome car for great views but spent afternoon time in the open car... More

We met the train in Ft. Garland, but you can also pick it up in Alamosa. Beautifully remodelled train cars whisk you away over La Veta Pass to the town of La Veta. We rode upstairs in the domed car (we had first class tickets) Great views but the AC was a little weak in the bright sunlight. The track... More

We enjoyed a nice ride up to Veta Pass, followed by a concert by Trout Fishing in America. The train staff was very friendly and helpful, the sightseeing good and the concert fun, while it lasted (it was rained out after a couple of songs). To their credit, the duo performed a mini-concert in one of the cars on their... More

We enjoyed a spectacular experience yesterday for the final Mountain Rails Live concert and train ride of the year on the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad -- catching the train in Fort Garland and riding to the concert site in a meadow atop La Veta Pass. Veteran folk musicians Robin and Linda Williams closed out the season in grand fashion. Whether... More

I simply love this railroad. Summer time concerts at the top of the mountain, then a fall foliage tour of the beautiful aspens turning yellow. All enjoyed without having to battle traffic.

We bought our "first class" tickets on-line, but it turned out that all the tickets are the same class. However, on the Friday we went, the trip was full booked, so glad we had made advance reservations. All passengers had assigned seats in the dome car but were free to explore and sit in the other 2 passenger cars, an... More

This is a follow up review for me. I've written about the Rio Grande Scenic before. But I wanted to tell the tripadvisor group just how special this attraction has become. My wife and I attended five great concerts on the train this year, starting off with the 50th Anniversary tour of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, followed by Exile,... More
