Did a round trip Sonora-Sonora Junction (via Sonora Pass on 108) then Topaz and back on 89/4 via Monitor Pass and Ebbetts Pass. I'd read how scary this was supposed to be. Well Sonora Pass (no snow left) was frankly boring, whereas Monitor/Ebbetts was stunning....More

California State Route 4 (elevation 8.730’). About a two-hour drive between Big Trees and Markleville. Google maps would not route me through this pass. It is not for the faint of heart, but it is a stunning challenging drive that we chose to take on...More

We were only able to go to Alpine Lake as the road was closed due to snow at that point. But we really enjoyed the trip; we stopped several times to take in the views. Lake Alpine is at 7,000 feet and there was snow...More

A beautiful drive along a well maintained two lane highway with plenty of places to explore off the main road. The scenery brings you in touch with nature and you can experience how the different elevations and seasons change as you continue on your drive....More

A cool road twisting and turning, a lot of sharp 180 degree turns. Would recommend driving this in daylight when the road is dry... The hairpin turns, in wet/icy conditions and at dark.... was an "interesting" experience... The east part is the worst, most narrow.

After breakfast, we made a 9 o’clock departure on highway 4 toward Markleeville, county seat for California’s smallest county, Alpine. It’s only 36 miles but it took almost two hours of driving on a two-lane curvy road. It was scenic all the way with giant...More

I drive over several times a year only in summer because it's closed in winter. I take my Harley Davidson sportster over when it's not a busy weekend so there is not much traffic. Then enjoy a little gambling in Nevada. If you love to...More

There's probably a reason why there are so few reviews on here. It's not exactly the shortest or quickest route over the Sierras but it sure is one of the most scenic ones. The road (as any mountain pass really) is steep and curvy and...More

I have never seen a place as beautiful as this highway. I will be back for sure when in the area and the roads are open. Words can't describe the natural beauty in the area.

Beautiful drive. Extremely frustrating to suddenly arrive at a gate closing the road. Like u couldn't put that at the bottom of the hill? All the locals know this happens at the first threat of snow. The Angels Camp / Murphys side is well marked...More
