It is different in that much is marsh land with a small pond. It's primary function is bird watching and there is a viewing stand in the marsh accessed by a board walk. There is a community garden spot and a modle airplane field also. It is not a garnd place but it is interesting and worthwhile for those that enjoy birding

A hidden biodiversity hot spot. Part of the Alabama Birding Trails system, Limestone Park is a mixed use facility on the edge of a water tupelo swamp. When you first drive in it looks like a lot of nothing but slow down and take a moment and you'll start to see what is there.
Over 288 species of animal and plant life have been catalogued so far at the park, including locally rare species like Bald Eagle, Osprey, Sandhill Crane, and Anhinga.
There is a wheelchair accessible birding platform to the right side of the park and a road that you can take to two marsh areas on the left (this is near the police firing range so do not be alarmed if you hear a gunshot when they are training). On the far side of the central pond is an RC airplane airfield.

The nature here is undeniable and the variety of species if you take time to look is mind boggling. Unfortunately the city seems to think it is worthless and upkeeps all the roads except the one leading to the birding platform and allows the RC club and church garden to overflow their bounds (which is public land being used privately). The garbage truck facility is washing chemicals into the environment and trash is being scattered around the park by blowing our of the trucks.

If you want to view one of the largest wetlands in the metro Birmingham area and see locally rare birds associated with such wetlands such as anhingas, tree swallows Wilson's Snipe and sedge wrens, go to Bird Observatory at Limestone Park. The park is also good for grassland birds such as medowlarks and bobolinks. The praire restoration beside the Bird Observatory parking lots is full of flowers from late Spring to Fall. A short interpretive nature trail has recently been added. Please note, other sections of the park are used for other purposes such as a remote control airplane club, community garden and police shooting range. However, you can still explore over most of the park without intruding on those spaces.

I have been a number of times and occasionally get to see the birds I am there to photograph. I do not live in the area and don't always have the time to be there at the best times of the day. I have friends that do and they get some very good wildlife photos.

This place when there is activity is good. We go there to see many of the local RC Airplane flyers. Neat to watch and good location for RC's to use and watch. But the rest of the park leaves you wanting.
Could be a great place with some work

Went by the park , late afternoon around 4 pm. Saw 3 White Egrets, 1 Blue Heron. Could hear a lot of smaller birds. The Purple Martins are making nests in the Martin house up by the front entrance. Several Canada Geese around the pond.
