This is a stately cathedral with beautiful mosaics and marble. It's a bit overshadowed by the surrounding buildings, but it's still a grand church, and well worth a stop.

This beautiful Cathedral is unfortunately squeezed in between some residential buildings. The interior is even more beautiful than the exterior. It is a Romanesque building built about seven hundred years after this style became out of style in Europa. Still, it is very attractive and have an almost Byzantine style with a lot of mosaics. Especially a mosaic of St Francis of Assisi over an entire wall is breath-taking. This Cathedral of St Matthews the Apostle is not highly regarded in guidebooks. I cannot understand this, it is well worth a visit.

I visited Saint Matthew's Cathedral in October 2021. It is not far from Connecticut Avenue and Dupont Circle. The cathedral is beautiful. The interior is very rich with a beautiful altar, paintings, decorations and many other things. I hope to return so I can attend mass here. The cathedral is important in history because the funeral mass for JFK was held here.

Even if you're not Catholic spending some reflective moments in this cathedral is special, even without the connections to JFK and other prominent people who have graced its interior.

This beautiful Cathedral takes the experience of Mass to a whole new level. This is the location of JFK's funeral. There are tours available, which I wish I would have taken the time to do. I'm sure there is much to learn about this remarkable place beyond the grandeur.

I recall grainy b&w tv coverage of President Kennedy's funeral mass from this church. The first time I visited, I was a wide-eyed high school student on a class visit. Since then, I've returned each trip and have been to mass several times. It's a gorgeous, peaceful spot. On this Sunday, I witnessed the joyful baptism of a sweet little girl.

Just across the road, and worth a look, is a memorial to the Nuns of the Battlefield, honoring the brave sisters who assisted the troops during the Civil War.

The Christmas decorations have not been taken down during my visit ( January 11, 2020). The Organist was practicing his music selections in preparation for the FREE Concert scheduled for the next day.

The mosaics at the walls and ceilings are still as beautiful as I remembered them. I said my prayers and planned to return the next day for the FREE Organ Concert.

Many folks never knew of this church until John Kennedy was assassinated. But his wife scheduled mass here.

The building has a truly beautiful interior space and there is much more history within its walls.

Beautiful church, we attended Sunday morning mass and enjoyed it. Priest had a good sermon and it was nice to have a peaceful reflection of our trip.

I never knew St. Matthew's existed and when invited to an event, I was pleasantly surprised that this Cathedral was hidden in Washington, DC. A visit is a must.
