Was trolling TripAdvisor.com for some ideas of things to do over the holidays and came across Hillwood Museum and Gardens. I have lived less than 10 miles away from this estate for nearly 20 years and never knew it existed! My husband and I went the next day and were completely blown away by the experience! We arrived at 10... More

Opulence beyond belief. Mansion overstates everything but the grounds/gardens are a delight and worth the admission all by themselves. Springtime is best. We were there during easter one year and it was gorgeous.

I've been to DC maybe 20 times, but never heard of Hillwood until this year. It's the former home of Marjorie Merriweather Post, heiress to the cereal empire, and a world-class art collector and politically-connected Washington doyenne of the post-WWII era. She was married to the ambassador to the USSR just before the war and she scooped up Russian treasures... More

This was our second visit. We went back for the Cartier exhibit. We enjoyed the jewelry, the Marjorie Merriweather Post gowns and the gardens even though the gardens are in a winter snooze.

Hillwood is a monument to the lifestyle and excellent taste of the business woman and millionaire Marjorie Merriweather Post. This Georgian home on 30 acres captures her taste and elegant lifestyle perfectly. After an excellent film in the visitor center we walked up to the house which contains over 17,000 objects selected personally by Ms. Post. We enjoyed the Russian... More

First, book your cafe reservation well in advance. More on this later. It was a $50 round trip cab ride from Downtown DC....taking the metro would still entail a lot of uphill walking through a hilly residential area. The cab is worth it. We got a warm welcome. The a/v unit is a great plus and included in admission. With... More

We visited Hillwood on Sunday, December 28 for our last chance to see the holiday decorations and the Cartier exhibit before they ended for the season. The Christmas displays are very well done throughout the main house and property. Decorations were very tasteful and complimented the excellent exhibits located all through the home. The line to enter (just after opening... More

Being of Russian descent, I am thankful for the fact that the Post heiress saved such great part of Russian culture when it was being destroyed due to instability in Russia. It is absolutely amazing. The coronation crown full of diamonds was my favorite piece, although Catherine The Great's imposing portrait in the entry room staircase is quite impressive as... More
