This was my first visit to this museum and I found it very enjoyable, perhaps more so than the National Gallery of Art. The paintings of historical figures perhaps struck home with me more, I'm not sure. I found myself making sure I went into...More

This historic art museum is open for free to visitors. I was impressed about the huge collection of portraits of many artists, celebrities, inventors, presidents. It is nice to go there in a rainy day also.

My favorite museum in DC. I especially am partial to the room of presidential portraits. Of course, being free of charge is a good thing also. This is a more adult-oriented museum, young kids might be bored.

This is one of those museums you could spend days and days in and never see everything. The presidential portraits are always a great place to start as each tells a more personal story as President's choose the person who does their portrait. There are...More

This gallery shares premises with the Smithsonian American Art museum and both are well worth a visit. I loved the 20th century Americans exhibition and the portraits of the American Presidents as well as the contemporary art section of the gallery

The presidential portraits are wonderful and meaningful pieces of history. Love the New Deal pieces. The modern...More

Not just portraits, but also some history around you. It is literally traveling through history as you see excellent real life scenery, and can easily get "lost" in imagining you were there settling the US.

The National Portrait gallery and the Americian Art Museum share two halves of the same building. In the courtyard between the two is a huge covered atrium that is the perfect city retreat in all weather. Warm in winter, cool in summer, dry in rain.I...More
