The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a very simple, yet powerful memorial. It tells a subtle story about the sacrifice made by our military there. I would recommend visiting early in the morning or later in the evening for less crowds.

Off the top of my head, the Smithsonian stop puts you out right in the middle of the national mall, so you'd still have a bit of a walk. Not too far though.
