We visited the North Carolina part and had a blast. They had brochures at the entrance post although there is no road there to go inside. The entrance is a little further down the main road. The untouched gravel road is a little bumpy but once you enter the swamp you will be taken to another level of raw nature.... More

This is my second visit to Mackay Island WR. It is a great area for viewing birds. Check MIWR website to verify if the 5-7 mile loop road in full or part is open and hunting season status. I did not realize hunting was allowed in the refuge and after hunting times the birds are skittish and often fly off... More

Everything is right off from the main road because that is the only road through the wetland. We went on a rainy day and it was a great way to spend such a lazy day. On the... More

This is a great spot to stop in and learn about the area. Park rangers are very knowledgeable. A great spot for children to learn about the area and the wildlife. Very tranquil views.

It is only about 40 minutes on back roads from Sandbridge (where we were staying). If you take the ride, notice all the tiny cemetery plots in people's yards along the way! (we... More

Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge (pronounced Mackie by locals) is about 90 minutes from the Virginia Beach Resort area, 60 minutes or less from Sandbridge and from the NC Outer Banks you can easily take the free Currituck Ferry to Knotts Island as Mackay Island is adjacent to KI. This location is a stopover for migratory birds and home to... More
