The drive up is a little freaky in spots but worth it at the top. The neat thing is how you can see Crazy Horse, the Needles, Mount Rushmore, and the Badlands (too hazy when we were there) just by moving your head. Bring some change for the binoculars if you want and don’t have your own.

Amazing views for miles! The road up is a little scary, but if you can white knuckle it, it's definitely worth it. I'm the distance you will be able to see the Presidents, Crazy Horse, Cathedral Spires... Amazing!

This is a great overlook and there is a ranger at the top to explain what you are looking at. The road isn't too scary just go slow. If you have small kids or individuals who aren't able to hike to a lookout, this is a great spot.

Plan on taking your time on the 1.2 mile road to the top and make sure you're in a vehicle that has reliable breaks for the trip back down. The views are breath taking. You can see Crazy Horse and Washington from Mt Rushmore, though easier to see if you bring binoculars or a camera with a quality zoom. We were passing our binoculars around our family to all take a closer look.

The drive up was pretty cool, lots of steep road, sharp bends and the last bit is almost single track, but the view was not as billed. You really don't get a view of Mount Rushmore/Crazy Horse as the literature suggests, at least not something that is descernible as being them...they are way too far away to be recognisable. In addition, the visual map on the lookout is very misleading.
If you aren't expecting to be able to see Mount Rushmore/Crazy Horse then the view is beautiful, looking out across the state park and hte badlands and across the mountains.

This lookout Tower was built in the 1940s by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) as a look-out for forest fires, and sits atop a 6023 foot mountain peak. It awards breathtaking and gorgeous 360-degree views of the surrounding Black Hills. Our tour-guide had brought binoculars, and through those we could see Mount Rushmore, the Needles, Crazy Horse and the Badlands -- way, way out in the distance. Luckily for us, it was a clear day, and we could see a lot.

It was a very narrow and bumpy gravel road to reach the top, but it was completely worth it -- just for the amazing panoramic views. Thank Goodness, we had left the driving to the expert. It was harrowing enough just to sit in the van, and look down from the edges with no railings.

Just a word of caution. There are steps to go up to the Observation deck. It can also get really windy up there, so hold on to your hats and glasses. The place is obviously not for those who are afraid of heights.

The drive up the hill was intense and just when we thought we were near the top, there was more! I am a little wimpy when it comes to heights! When we arrived at the top, I was thinking about my mechanics offhand comment about my brakes needing some work in the future, so....I didn't enjoy the 6,000+ feet view as much as I could have! Kids loved the view finders for a quarter and we could see Crazy Horse and Mt Rushmore. As it turns out, the drive down wasn't so bad at all! Worth the mental anguish.

And up a narrow, gravel road that went up and up. When I thought we were about at the top, there was more

And the views as others. Have said are spectacular. There is an installed telescope but I used my camera to look at mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse and the needles.

This is well worth the visit for panoramic views of The Black Hills. You can see the Crazy Horse Memorial, Mount Rushmore, Harney Peak, the Needles and the Badlands. The drive up was straightforward on a good quality dirt road.

The drive up is full of switchbacks without guardrails. My mother-in-law kept her eyes closed the whole time but the rest of the family loved it! Once you're up top it's actually a little dizzying! The tower is at an elevation of more than 6,000 ft and you KNOW it when you're up there. Everything looks so far away!

It's free and a great place to stretch your legs during the long drive in Custer. There's a permanent portapotty up there and it's alarmingly close to the edge of the cliff. Be sure not to run out of the bathroom or you'll run right off the edge of the hill!
