There are size restrictions for vehicles, so being in a camper we considered skipping this stop on our way home, but it worked out so we were able to take the drive. The roads are very small and wind back and forth, but the needle formations are very interesting to look at. There are also areas where you can park... More

Had so much fun driving this road we actually drove it three times in three days. Could not believe how the rock was carved out to actually drive through it!!!! Amazing photo opportunity all along this road

We drove from Wyoming to South Dakota on a beautiful fall day in November. The Needles Highway was my most favorite thing to see, along with Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. This is about 14 mile road, but takes a good 1/2 hour to travel. Take your time and take lots of photos. God's beauty is breathtaking.

Go for it! Measure your vehicle carefully to be sure that you will make it through the 3 tunnels on the Needles Highway. You can get information about the tunnel sizes at the visitor centre. Views from the road and hiking trails are spectacular. This is high elevation country. Take your time and enjoy the views. The road ends at... More

This was my first visit to the Black Hills area. The views were breathtaking. Around every turn the vistas were unbelievable. We also did the Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Iron Road Highway, Custer State Park, Spearfish Canyon. What an adventure! Many attractions were closed for the season, but the crowds were minimal. I tend to go in the opposite... More

Needles Hiway drive is a must, it is 14 miles of turns, and stunning scenery, we had the pleasure on the way up passing by a lone grazing Bison, seeing the needle like rock formations is amazing, it has some small tunnels through the mountain. Once you reach the top you go through the needles eye, a rock formation carved... More

It's a very long 14 miles when you are the one behind the wheel. Since the road is so narrow with many tight hairpin turns and a few extremely narrow tunnels, you can't really enjoy the scenery when driving. You can certainly appreciate the considerate drivers approaching you that manage to stay on their own side of the road though!... More

The views are great and it's pretty in the fall. During tourist season watch for kids running g across the road at the main stops.

We enjoyed our drive down Needles highway. We parked and got out several times to explore the rock formations and trails.

This was a crazy fun drive, but that is what I live for. Great views, nice windy road, really tight tunnels. Take it slow and enjoy it. Some might be scared of the tunnels.
