The rule here is that each and every train trip will be different. We rode the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Los Angeles in late March, 2017. Our train left every major station on time and arrived in LA 40 minutes early. I had been...More

We did the California Zephyr a few days ago and thought it one of the best travel experiences of a lifetime. This shorter journey (Emeryville to Seattle) was looking like a similarly fab time until a mudslide north of Portland curtailed it early. On the...More

Don't expect a lot with the starlight and then you might be pleased rather than disappointed. Customer service was abysmal with it appearing to be a problem if you asked a question and a lot of trouble for the conductors to answer. The only nice...More

We were scheduled to travel on the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Emeryville on April 1st so perhaps we were foolish to assume that things would go smoothly. The night before we were scheduled to depart, we received a recorded message saying that "all or...More

We took the train from Sacramento to Seattle (or so we thought) in Jan 2017. The sights are magnificent on the way and the train is comfortable and even has a very cool car that is almost completely out of glass so you can see...More

First off, I have to admit that my mostly disappointing first experience on Amtrak was based on my having paid business class seat price (Emeryville to Seattle) for far less than coach experience, which I've read is quite pleasant. My seat was in a coach...More

We took the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Oakland in a Superliner bedroom and meals were included. We enjoyed meeting fellow travelers in the Parlor car but liked having the ability to spend time in our room enjoying the scenery. Many of the people we...More

You can call them, go to one of their stations, or check the Amtrak webpage. On the webpage go to "Buy Tickets" and select if you want one way, round trip, or multi-city tickets. Then enter your starting station and your... More

Thinking about a backpacking type of trip. Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo. Then to a national Park for a day of hiking, one night in a hotel, and then back to LA. The train web sites are all confusing. How long is the train ride? How close are hotels and hiking to the train station? Thanks for the help.

There are hotels all over San Luis Obispo, so I am sure there are hotels close to the train station. At worst, you might have to take an Uber for a 5 min drive to a hotel. The hotel we stayed at was a 10 minute drive from... More
