This area is a hill covered with forest and a lot of streams. The forest is dense and humid and the trails get really muddy, so hiking boots are recommended. I spent a few hours on Saturday and met only one other person, so definitely not crowded. There are a few benches here and there if you want to relax.... More

Only one walking track, takes about 2 hours to complete, start and finish at same point. Some sections of the track are steep. Wear good comfortable footwear.

Did the Onetangi Beach to Whakanewha Beach hike. Walking through Onetangi Forest and Bird Reserve was a highlight of the hike. I saw Tuis, New Zealand Pigeons and Fantail Piwakawaka. The walk is well shaded with giant ferns and lush vegetation. Be sure to sanitize your shoes at the entry points to avoid transmitting disease to the Kauri Trees.

With the abundance of birdlife and the beautiful quiet surroundings - great activity to do with friends or family.

Onetangi Forest & Bird Reserve is an easy stroll on Waiheke Island, and it can be a day trip from Auckland taking the ferry and bus on the island if you have no car or a rental.

Back to nature; beautiful, unpolluted. Eden-like. Waiheke is special because of its perfect natural scenery. This is a terrific place to escape from the rat race.

It's just a walk through a forest, not more and not less. The forest is nice enough, but the paths are muddy, and while you hear the birds, you don't see them.
