What a beautiful and peaceful place. We spent time just sitting at the port watching the ferries come and go. Plenty of photo opportunities. This is one of those Wow places. We loved this place and we will go back one day.

What a beautiful little town, the gateway to the South Island. I’ve never seen so many motorhomes queuing for the ferry!
We walked up path which overlooks the town and harbour, a stunning view on a lovely day. The town itself is very quaint with a lovely harbour side looking out to mountains beyond.
A great place to wonder and explore especially if the sun is out.

We visited this place as part of a cruise. Not sure how you would get here otherwise unless you drive but if you can get here it is a stunning place to visit. A modest town with some shops and cafes but some stunning scenery, particularly if you get out on the Sound in a boat

We were lucky to have been here for a sailing to Wellington on a good autumn day. Picton township provided some nice coffee and a place to stretch our legs after a drive in. Certainly a picturesque part of the country and taking the Cook Strait ferry gave a birds eye view from the sea.
Waikawa Bay was a nice spot a short drive from Picton for a picnic lunch.

Picton Sound is spectacular and is best viewed on the ferry that leaves Picton. The scenes of the Sound change dramatically in every frame of the journey by ferry.

Located at the head of main street this is a very pleasant, welcoming park and beach. Beautiful flower planting, good seating, a marked swimming area and rest rooms. The entire harbor can be seen from the park including the Cook Sound ferry terminals, and the local marinas. Recommend for as much time as you want to relax and enjoy. Hope this helps.

We only stayed in Picton for one night, but we decided to have a walk through the Victoria Domain. What a breathtaking scenery! The Sounds are just amazing! If you don't have time to explore the Queen Charlotte Sound, this is where you have to go! The water had an incredible colour and the surrounding hills where just picture-perfect. We walked to Bob's Bay and back via the Harbour View Track, which took us about an hour plus a numerous photo stops. The track steadily winds its way up, but is well graded. Most of the time you walk under trees and are not too exposed to the sun. On the Harbour View Track is a great lookout. You can also drive up there with the car. You could spend much more time in the Victoria Domain (up to 2 hrs one way on the Snout Track), it has a good net of walkways.

I took the long trip to Doubtful Sound from Wakefield last week, and wish I had not bothered. The mail boat cruise of Queen Charlotte Sound is much prettier and very interesting. I chose the Beachcomber line and the boat was very comfortable, with free tea and coffee. The commentary was very interesting and amusing. We stopped for a short time at Ship Cove, which is lovely, then went to various houses or little villages, dropping off the mail.
Picton is a delightful little port and the Marlborough Sounds are jaw-droppingly beautiful. The price was NZ$91 per adult. Worth every cent!
