Some of the museum is closed due to the quake but the rest is very well laid out and is informative. There is a half hour video recording showing the local history. The background music is too loud and dreary, some of the dialogue was lost because of it.

Right on the Main Street of Akaroa, this museum was well attended by people off the cruises and others. Has a good DVD of the history. The face mask which was good enough to detail facial tattooing was a gem. I especially liked the local furniture carver. His fusion of Maori and Celtic was masterful.

Part of the exhibition was closed for renovation, but what we could see was very well presented. Good information, not too much or too little that our 11 year old would skip reading, and also enough at his eye height to keep him interested. Good info on the origins of Akaroa plus some special exhibition of unique local carved furniture.

Not too much to see although it is a work in progress. It would be nice to see the old french cottage fully restored. It should be showcased.

I really had a good time at this museum. It had great collections of things used in the area and a couple of interesting outbuildings. It is not a "cultural" museum with great art but a picture into the lifestyle of the local people.

Located at the top of the town, this is a small Museum but it gives you an overview of the history. The DVD is 20 minutes on continuous run. There are some artifacts.

This is just a small museum, but it's good for a quick pop-in. Are you curious why there's so much French stuff in Araroa? Wondering about the early settlers? Want to see some early artefacts and art? Good for say a 15-20 minute visit, and very conveniently located on the main street. Plus it's free!

I have paid yearly to Friends of The Museum and just love this small but very interesting Historically informative Museum. They play an excellent DVD about the history and cultures in the area the French ,British,German immigrants settled in the 1850s. So worth while for tourists to learn about the area.

A small museum that is undergoing extension work at the moment but it is still worth a visit. Fascinating insight into local history
