The Army Museum of Western Australia is a regional museum which showcases Western Australia's role in the various conflicts in which Australia has participated. Saying that it also brings to the front Australia's role in the many conflicts that have seen an involvement by Australian armed forces.

The Museum occupies the whole of the 1912 Artillery Barracks site, which in itself is a significant historical building and is heritage listed. There are many Galleries situated on the ground floor and upper floor in addition to other displays in out buildings and the front parade ground show cases a large number of Army vehicles from many periods.

Some of the Galleries cover Pre 1914, WW1, WW1 Middle East, POW, WW2 Middle East Greece and Africa, WW2 Pacific War, Post WW2 conflicts. There are more!

Visits for the public are conducted at 10:30am and 1:00pm each day, from Wednesday through to Sunday. Visits take approximately two hours and are escorted. All adult visitors to the museum must have the appropriate photo ID.

The Museum is run in the main by Curatorial and Guide Volunteers. Well worth a look, you will be surprised at the content and layout of the displays. Western Australia, being so isolated has a reputation for building excellent Museums as the population are a bit restricted in being able to visit the Eastern States facilities.

One thing that comes through from visitors comments to this page and the actual Museum visitors is to allow a good two hours for your visit, that is the minimum to cover the full displays.

I've visited military museums around the world and found the Army Museum of Western Australia among the best. Our guide, Ray, added another dimension to the excellent displays of Australia's military history. He's actually hiked the Kokoda Track and walked the Gallopoli battlefields. It was also a treat to see a Grant tank...my first.

This museum retraces Australia's military history from its early colonial militia units to modern peace keeping missions. Displays are very well done, explanatory notes are concise and informative. Guided tours are free and worthwhile if you don't have much time on hand. Guides are very knowledgeable and will walk you through all the museum's highlights. Of course, if you wish... More

A really interesting place to visit with a comprehensive collection of items covering Australian military history. The displays are well presented and the information included with the displays is excellent. Our guide was very good and made the tour very interesting with his little anecdotes and snippets of extra information. Certainly well worth a visit.

A wonderful display of Army history. Well set out. Our free volunteer guide was excellent. Allow at least 2 hours for this visit. Well worth the small entry fee.

Arrived by train from Perth and should have taken the free CAT bus which has a stop not far from the museum. However, I decided to walk and as it was a rather hot day I was somewhat drained by the time I arrived at the gates. There's a "barrier mechanic" on duty to let you in and the museum... More

This is a great place to visit if your in the Freo area, give your self a couple of hours to wander through the many displays. There is even a dress up room where you can try on many period uniforms . There are tanks and trucks to wander over , and the staff there are fantastic. Don't forget to... More

From the moment you walk in to the time you walk out, you can emerse yourself in the history of our Brave men and woman from every theatre of war. All the guides are volunteers but are wonderful to chat too. Care and thought as been taken with each display and some of the full size ones are so realistic... More

The Army Museum of Western Australia in Perth was a stop we had to make a few weeks ago when we were in the area. We spent a few hours looking at the exhibits, hearing the stories and learning about the Army’s military history. Could have used some more interactive displays but decent overall.

We ended up staying 2.5 hours as we had a very passionate guide. He helped bring the subject to life but towards the end my kids had had enough. Lots of interesting facts and more displays than I expected. Not the wow factor of modern interactive museums but still very well done. Suits 8 years plus as I think younger... More
