Nice enough place and free to get in but wholly soulless. Having had a rellie die in the asylum I was interested to see the history of the place but it just seems to be an arts space ( and that was closed ).

This is always an interesting place to visit. Good exhibitions, a range of books, and a gift shop with great local craft. For something with a rather depressing history as a 'lunatic' asylum, it always feels very peaceful sitting in the courtyard. No ghosts perhaps. The cafe wasn't open on the day we visited but a pleasant young man made some great toasties for us out of a caravan. A beautiful sandstone gothic building.

This is one of the many amazing old historical buildings in Freo, you cannot drive past it, it's just that interesting. Opened in 1864 as a home for Lunatics and Invalids (yikes) it's had a chequered history, to say the least. However, reading about it on the internet and going to the actual place where it all happened are two completely different things. The three art exhibitions that were on when we were there were okay, but we went mainly to see the history and the beauty of the old building. However there was nowhere set up with the history or photos or anything like that. One would have thought that they could put one room aside to take a nod to the past, and let visitors know the history, get a feel for the past, to have that as one of the 'experiences' one could enjoy while there. It just seemed odd, but perhaps that's just us. We like to read about what went on in historical buildings, what types of people lived there, what their lives were like, etc, but there was none of that. We came away feeling a bit cheated. Perhaps that's just the modern way of doing things, leave it all on the internet and hope people read it there. Seems a shame though.

During the warmer months there is live music on Sunday afternoon with food stalls and a licensed bar in the front lawn area I can't recommend it enough

Went to the Christmas markets at the Fremantle Arts Centre and wasnāt surprised but was still disappointed. Yuppie, boomer art stalls as was expected. What wasnāt expected was a stall that sold candles made from breast milk. Naturally I bought about six for secret Santa gifts, Gross and amazing idea.

AVOID PAYING FOR COURSES HERE AT ANY COST. I have recently had an experience with the FAC that has utterly destroyed my opinion and faith in them. They have no care whatsoever for extenuating covid-related circumstances. If there is even the slightest chance at all that you will not be able to attend a course for ANY reason do not pay for it. You will find yourself (like I did) $100+ dollars out of pocket. They have no sympathy, care, or understanding for individuals.

This place is stunning! There is street parking nearby (paid) not suitable for a caravan. It is free entry with a lovely cafe inside also. The vibes here are excellent with great art displays.

The Fremantle Arts Centre is a neo-Gothic building construced by convicts. The centre was completed in 1860 and used as a lunatic asylum. It is said to be one of the most haunted places in Australia. It was saved from demolition in 1958 and reopened as an arts centre in 1970. The Fremantle Arts Centre is a centre for the Arts and creativity in Western Australia.

Went to see the building as much as the art. What a grand structure it is. Saw an exhibition of indigenous art and would have bought plenty if I could afford it. Free entry helps!

All kinds of art here in the former spooky asylum .
The gift shop, Found, is full of locally crafted treasures.
There is often a display of art to see and the variety of art classes changes throughout the year. Lovely shady grounds good for alfresco eating
