Lovely from the outside, don’t bother going inside especially if you are not native Slovak, also beware of extremely, extremely rude staff. No organisation regarding tours or purchasing tickets... no signs, oh and you can’t go in self guided my partner and I learned that the hard way including another international couple who was visiting at the same time as us, in which we were verbally screamed at by ‘the manager?’ Utterly disgraceful, save your time and money.

Visited in mid-December on a gloomy day with very few people around. As luck would have it, it is Wednesday, because the castle is open from Wednesday to Sunday during this period. We arrive at midday and ... closed for lunch break until 12.30. Second attempt at 12.30pm: guided tours only. First guided tour in English: 1.40 pm. On the third try we finally get in. The guide, not very motivated and not at all interactive, starts like lightning towards the interior and speaks like a machine, with the aim of not finishing after 3pm (closing time). Luckily the interior is very beautiful and richly furnished. Icing on the cake: freezing castle interior. Positive note: the nice hot bathrooms.

Bojnice Castle is traditionally considered the most famous and most beautiful castle in Slovakia - although this is a country that has many castles. This reputation is well deserved. The castle is very large and beautiful - both outside and inside. Visiting the interior halls (as well as the burial vault and a small cave) is only possible as part of a tour group. The tour lasts almost an hour and a half; unfortunately, almost all tours are in Slovak, there are only 2 tours per day in English (one of them is at 13-45, this is what we chose). We got to the castle from Bratislava. It is quite a long journey - 3 hours by train, to the Prievidza station, then local bus number 3 (no more than 10 minutes). However, we did not regret the time spent. I recommend it!

Very easy to find.
Parking is 100m from the caste and costs 7 EUR for the whole day.
The castle is in very good condition and renovated. You can take self guided tour or guided tour. Price is 11 EUR per person for the Castle and 11 EUR for the Gallery and combined 15 EUR per person.
Description is in Slovak, they need to put in couple more languages or just English,
You have a lot to explore both outside and inside, including the garden and cave.
We recommend the Bojnice Castle.

The exterior of Bojnice Castle is indeed stunning, a true fairy tale sight. However, the interior did not live up to expectations. We were informed that the tour was only available in Slovak, but English texts would be provided. Unfortunately, these texts were limited to a disorganized and very brief pamphlet with little information.

Better communication about the nature of the tour would have been appreciated. We assumed there would be English descriptions inside the rooms, but this was not the case. To add to the disappointment, when the tour began, our son was not allowed to enter with his ice cream. While this is understandable, the way it was communicated to us was very unfriendly.

Overall, it was a disappointing experience. Proper information before starting the tour and a more comprehensive English guide would greatly improve the visit.

Beautiful castle, well worth a visit. Apparently it can only be visited with a guided tour. Unfortunately, on our arrival time the tour was in Slovak. We did get a good English leaflet, with a clear explanation per room. The tour went at a fast pace (nice!) and we saw a lot of the castle. If you have difficulty walking, you can't do it with all stairs.

I didn’t actually go inside the castle, I just wanted to admire the views from the outside. They are amazing and would recommend to anyone.

Castle Review
The castle is surrounded by a nice area with a few places to get food and drink. Most of the tourists we observed there were from Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany.
There were no English-speaking tourists that we noticed that day.
As we found out later English language tours are available only for large groups on certain days and times and must be booked in advance via the website. If you cannot fit into that then don’t expect any sympathy from the guides. We were a small group there at the wrong time.
The signage reflected the tourist demographics and no English translations of guide pamphlets nor of the information boards etc.
The castle itself is beautiful and well restored and looked after. The fortifications were fascinating showing a lot of thought had gone into making this structure with multi-layered defences. At the same time, it has all the grandeur of a stately home. The rooms are displayed in full gilded splendour. Tapestries, furniture and priceless artefacts abound. The closest parallel I could think of in the UK is Edinburgh Castle. If like me, you love Edinburgh Castle then I think you will like this castle as well. It is a magnificent thing.
The two guides we encountered spoke good English and the first guide made it clear to us at the start of the guided tour, however the tour was carried out entirely in Slovak. The second guide who handled the latter third of the tour was only marginally less harsh. Being a tourist from England my wife who is from this part of the world whispered very quietly in my ear a translation of what the guide was saying. The guide did not take this well, not because it was disturbing anyone but because she deemed it as inattentive and shouted at us in English more than once. The same English could have been put to better use.
I did not ask for nor expect special treatment because of my not being a Slovak speaker. I just did not ask for nor expect bad treatment.
I think the guides would benefit from some training time in the UK when it comes to customer service as there is clearly a lot of opportunity for growth in that area.
Additionally, for those with an interest in history there is some revisionist bending of historical truth because of the castle and surrounding area previously being Hungarian. The Hungarian role in the history of the castle and its surroundings is airbrushed out of the narrative. Despite this the Hungarian names and places can still be seen if looked for like sunbeams through a cloud.
I would encourage my fellow English speakers to visit the castle and enjoy it as I did.

We went to see the Bojnice castle in November as the photos seemed really nice. We were travelling through Slovakia with 2 kids (13, 8), so we had to make the trip interessant for them as well.
The castle is magnificient-from outside is a bit like Neuschwanstein. Well kept park and sourrondings, lots of possibilities to buy souvenirs, but also local products. Do not par by the castle-too expensive!
We reached the castle just in time for the last admittance. The entrance fee for 2 adults and 2 children+allowance to take pictures is 25€,which is not much...when one gets a proper guide. We were asked about the language and we said we could prefer italian, but english was also fine. They gave as a paper with infos in italian-that later on we discovered was the guide plan of the castle.
The guide does not deserve this job. No greeting...no nothing. She asked in skovakian language who speeks slovakian, half of the group (5 persona) raised their hands and this was it. She started the walk throug the castle and the explanation in slovakian. We were waiting for a translation...but not 1 word in english (or any other language) was spoken. This is outrageous.
I started to read from the leaflet the infos to the kids, so we at least knew what we were looking at. The guide turned around and shushed us! If this has anything to do with hospitality and professional conduct, then they should overthink the strategy.
The whole visit was more like running through the castle-seemed like we were in a hurry.
I travel quite often and I must say I have never seen a guide acting like that.
At the end we were glad we visited the castle, because it is a real treasure...but it is a pity anda shame to treat history and architectural sightseeings with such disrespect. Not to mention the lack of respect towards visitors.

Bojnice Castle is really the centerpiece of the town. If you enjoy castles, ancient artifacts, or history, you will not be disappointed. Dozens of rooms contain the artifacts from the Palffy family, including amazing artwork and furniture collected over several generations. You will be walking some lengthy staircases, so if you're not in decent physical shape, you might be in for a bit of exercise.

I know several people have commented on the lack of English-speaking tours. Well, what can I say? It's rural Slovakia, not big-city Bratislava. Hardly anyone in Bojnice speaks fluent English. That shouldn't be a surprise to a savvy traveler. If you know German, that is much more useful with the locals. If you want to make the best of it, my suggestion is to purchase the Bojnice Castle English booklet from the gift shop (it's like 2 or 3 Euros) before your tour. Better yet: go there during the Fairy Tale festival in June, and go on a Tales of Grimmocov tour. You get to see almost all of the rooms in the castle, plus you get performances of several of Grimm's fairy tales in each of the rooms. Sure, the performances are in Slovak, but so what? If you know Grimm's tales, you can follow along easily. It was a fantastic way for us non-native speakers to enjoy our castle visit.

Combine that with the spa and the zoo, and you can have a great weekend trip from Vienna, Bratislava, or Krakow. If you're taking the train to Prievidza, go ahead and pay 4 or 5 Euros for the cab ride to Bojnice. Cabs in Prievidza don't price-gouge you like Bratislava cabs do.
