This Museum, which is housed by Riga Dome Cathedral, has its entrance hidden at the back of this big structure. Originated in 1773 as a private collection of Nikolaus von Himsel ( a Riga doctor), now being one of the oldest museum in Europe.

It sounds a bit shallow, but I decided to visit this museum on a whim, because of the photo of the lovely ceremonial hall in my info leaflet. Along the way I learned about various parts of history of Riga. I really enjoyed beautiful works made from silver that were given to city as a gift as well as models... More

Detailed and informative displays, nicely organized. The museum has a great layout and there are many pieces of artefacts that catch the Viewers interest. Easy to understand the showcases although most of the information was in English. Didactic and a good learning experience.

I was expecting this museum to cover things like in a naval museum but instead this museum had a little bit of everything with interesting exhibits on typical clothing, musical instruments, coins, medals, and all other elements of Latvian culture over the years. There were nice displays and good explanations of what was to be seen. It stretched up to... More

We wanted to explore Latvia's history and this was a great place to do it. It starts off in the neolithic period and has some great archaeological finds. Although all captions are in Latvian, there are multi-language guides for the displays in each room. It is a large museum where you could easily spend a few hours. There is also... More

We were rather suprised by the museum when we visited. It was huge and rather good. Each exhibiton had written guides in several languages which was brilliant. The museum staff were friendly and helpful.

We searched for the entrance for an hour. Then we talked to a military Police watch in front of this presidencial castle, just to find out that there is no museum here and even he did not know where it might have been moved, if at all......

This museum gives great insight into Riga's navigational history as well as its general history. I had not originally expected to go but found myself close by. It was a smart move. The museum explores and explains in detail the evolution of all aspects of Riga's culture, home life, military and government. It highlights the many changes in possession by... More

The museum has things to offer everyone. The nautical/navigation exhibits were my favorite, but there were plenty of things for my wife to enjoy. Our 9-year old was also interested in many displays. The only bad part was we had to hurry through the displays more than I wanted to. I would go back!
