This place became very special to my husband and me on our recent trip to Latvia. I had "been back" once to Latvia, but he was visiting for the first time in 70 years. This open air museum is unique in its location and its arrangement. It is a reasonable half-hour public bus ride from the city centre- and its... More

The museum is set up by geographic area. There is a fishing area, a farming area etc. Most areas have small crafty things for sale.

Showing the typical Latvian old living style and situations, this place is good for just being in the nature and enjoying the outside. Some weeks they have events there - a good one is Easter, Summer solstice and Winter solstice. But be aware that the trip to this place will include some extra headaches - car parking (not for free... More

Easy enough to get to on No1 bus from Riga (once we had found the stop!) takes about 30 mins. Very nice walk coupled with seeing old buildings from all over Latvia. Only a few of the building were open for viewing, but it was a Tuesday in March and this was reflected in the admission price of 2 E.... More

Freezing February might not usually lend itself to a long walk in the woods, but it actually helped to really bring home how harsh country life must have been in centuries past! A brilliant collection of wooden dwellings, farms, workshops, windmills & churches etc., from both inland and from by the water. The only shame was that although some of... More

Visited in Feb 2016, so there were only a few of the 122 or so old buildings open. The site is extensive and the buildings are from all over Latvia, many dating from the 1700's. Some local crafts being demonstrated. Lovely walk through the woods around the site. The restaurant serves very cheap local cuisine and drink of excellent quality.... More

This is a must see if you visit Riga. Here you can walk around on a sunny day and see insite and outsite the Farms mills and Houses from the old days. Ther ar a lot of things for young and old.
