We expected to find an engaging experience of ancient est-european lifestyle but instead we found ourselves wandering around a quite deserted place. The map provided was really poor of details and hard to follow, plus almost every attraction was closed. Looking at the bright side you get a nice insight of the Latvian countryside and you can find a nice... More

We went on the Wednesday after the Easter weekend and there was nothing going on. All the buildings were closed up and we couldn't see inside. It was one wooden building after another with the odd windmill thrown in. We were recommended by a friend to visit and he said that the buildings were all open and there were lots... More

I visited the Museum last year during the Folk Arts Fair and it was absolutely wonderful. There were lots of stalls selling traditional Latvian products and foods as well as space to sit and relax in the sun. Perfect for a family day out or just with friends. You really get a feel of Latvian culture and a chance to... More

I've been to ethnographic museums in Finland & in Takayama, Japan but this is definitely my favourite as it has over 120 incredible wooden buildings that make you feel like you've stepped back in time. We went early on a Sunday morning & found ourselves wandering around pretty much on our own. The explanations are written in Latvian, Russian &... More

Beautifully restored buildings (not to 'modern' condition, but in the condition they were when people lived in them 100's of years ago). The attendants tell you how they were used, for instance the large homes with a hearth in the middle had a fire going 24x7 in winter (as snow outside). Little lids slept on the hearth, as it was... We went there with 2 small kids. We really liked the place, I would say even better than we expected! Just we went there on early spring, so moody puddles was everywhere :-) defiantly we will come back in summer.

Lovely surroundings, easy to get to via the number one bus from Riga. But in late february, all the houses were shut and the there was no where on site to buy food or drink of any sort. Slushy snow and snow melt on most of the paths. However, the setting was very atmospheric and we spent about 2 hours... More
