One of old Riga's fortification wall towers, originally called the Sand Tower, this structure now includes the Latvian War Museum. Admission is free, is open all day up to 17:00 and is well worth a visit, very interesting place.

We came across this museum whilst on the Riga culture walking tour and went back the next day. It is free to visit and is on several floors. There are toilet facilities and you can buy souvenirs if you wish in the lobby.

Apparently centuries ago this building could have stored gunpowder rebuilt around the 17th century the stone masons , with a sense of humour, inserted cannon balls that had not penetrated the walls from an early invasion by Swedish army.

A big and interresting museum, a lot of pictures and artifacts. A big minus that so little information is in english, but a big plus that it was free entry

Free entry, but nevertheless a great collection of Latvian war history starting from earliest settlers and continuing to present day.
