This is a simple, yet powerful monument, commemorating the liberation from Communism in 1991.
The graffiti in the background warns against the old threat returning.

I noticedthis memorial during my walks around Old Town. There is nothing fancy about, quickly took some pictures and moved on.

There are a few of these some bronze another carved of granite that marked where the People of Latvia declared their Independence from the Soviet block in 1991. Thought this is in living memory for many, it needs to be passed down to the next generations as they enjoy the freedoms of an Independent Latvia.

This pyramid-shaped memorial unveiled in 2007 commemorates those who died during the confrontations, known as Barricades, between Latvian and Soviet forces in January 1991.

Considering the importance of the matter, the memorial could have been more impressive.

There are monuments to find as you explore- Riga and, as you might expect, not all are listed on Tripadvisor. One that I did expect to find was the footprints in the pavement to commemorate the Bsltic Way.

This monument is a very modern one to the declaration of Latvian indepence in 1991, less than 20 years ago - which is astonishing.

The monument commemorates the declaration of Latvia's independence in 1991. The citizens of Riga were afraid of Soviet invasion and built barricades to protect the city. It is situated near the buildings of Latvian Parliament (Saeima)

On the little pyramid you find the names of eight people killed while defending the barricades against the Soviets.

A poignant memorial which remembers some very recent history from 1991. Latvia had declared its independence from the USSR and they feared that the Soviets would retake Latvia by force. They were right, and so the Latvian government called upon its citizens to man the barricade to stop the Soviets. This memorial marks where one such barricade was near the Parliament Building.

Check out the recent history of Riga first so you understand the resistance the city assembled to repel the Russians at the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. A call was put out to the entire country to bring whatever they could to barricade the city to prevent the Russians from entering. School was cancelled so children/teens could help man the barricades during the day and adults watched at night. Sadly, 5 people were killed during this time but the Russians never tried to enter the city. You can incorporate visited this memorial as part of a walking tour in Old Town Riga.
