St. John or Janni church is fine example of Baltic brick gothic style from 14th century. Exterior is quite impresive and intersting but inside is very plan and simple without any decoration. Most famous feature is terracotta figures on outer walls and also some on...More

Old church (1200-1300). Free to enter. A euro to take photos. Interesting terra-cotta sculptures throughout. All brick structure which is just beautiful. You can see how the ground has settled as some walls are no longer straight.

Saint John's church is the main architectural monument in Tartu. Probably the most interesting medieval building in Baltic.

We attended a concert in this church and during listening watched the collection of terra-cotta heads. Not to be missed.

You are walking in the old city and here between the houses you see this beautiful red brick church. You can climb into the tower, but you need a ticket. You don't see a lot, but we think it's worth it :)

For Tartu, or any other city for that matter, to have a known site escape the authoritarian communist city planning is a miracle! This one is definitely one. Simple, elegant, and different. It also has scerts of its own. It is now Lutherian but was...More
