Viru Gates
About
Viru Gates were built in the 14thC, and the towers still standing today are only a part of the original structure. Viru Gates are located in the eastern section of the town wall. The main tower of the gates was built in its initial form in 1345-1355. Today, Viru Gates are one of the entrances into the Old Town leading to numerous shops and restaurants in Viru Street.

    The symbol of Tallinn
Viru Gate is two of the best preserved of the towers that once protected the city of Tallinn. Today, the two towers have become the symbol of Tallinn Old Town. When you first enter the Old Town through the gate, it makes you feel as though you have stepped back in time.

‘They have an informative board, detailing the history behind the gate.’
Nice area in central Tallinn which gives you a insight of what the old city walls would’ve looked like ‘back in the day.’ They have an informative board, detailing the history behind the gate. It’s an excellent meeting spot, as there’s a lot of bars and restaurant surrounding the area as well as a flower market outside the city gate. Overall, the two towers are rather fascinating as they provide the entrance to one of the most popular pedestrianised streets in Tallinn.

    Welcoming Entrance
The Viru Gate formed part of the defences of Old Tallinn and was built in the 14th century. The main tower was square and the barbicans had smaller round towers. Today it is a wide and welcoming entrance to the Old Town. There are market stalls nearby and tourist attractions. The tram stops near here too. It certainly provides a welcome!

Gothic entrance to a medieval town
The Viru gate is the first thing you will see before you enter into the streets of the Old town. What usually happens is most people take photographs of it because it is not only a piece of history still standing strong but it is also majestic and a work of art. Viru gate dates back to the 14th century. It was built as a protective barrier during the ages when the city was under attack. The walls are gone but the gate still stand strong and resilient. It was nicely decorated during the holidays and was a welcoming sight.

A selfie with the gates in the background is an instantly recognizable Tallinn photo. Beautiful way to enter the Old Town. Note that an information sign is posted nearby in Estonian and English (those types of signs appear routinely throughout the Old Town).

The Viru Gate is the most historical and interesting entrance into the Old Town. It is also the site of Tallinn’s two best-preserved stone towers. The towers are what’s left of the gates, which were part of the defense system of the city and date from the 14th century. At that time, Tallinn reportedly was the most fortified city in all of Europe. Originally, there were a total of forty-five towers built into the walls that protected Tallinn. Twenty-six of those still remain, but these two are the best preserved. Part of the gate was pulled down in 1880, in order to make room for a wider street. There is an information board, detailing the history behind the gate. There are a lot of bars and restaurants in the immediate area and from here you are only a few hundred yards from the old town square. Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site lauded as an “exceptionally complete and well-preserved” medieval city and the gates are certainly worth a visit. (PaM)

These are fantastic ancient gates to the old town.
They provide a fantastic photo-op and provide a castle-like atmosphere to the old town's entrance.

A good starting point to visiting the old town as easy to get to logistically if using a taxi.

One of the best parts of the city wall to take photos and a must see.

The towers are all that is left of what was originally a much larger gate structure, but they remind you of the past and are still attractive. There is a lovely flower market just on the other side.

For several centuries this had stood as marker entrance going to the economic zone , the Old Town of Tallinn. Nice to take photos which serve as a reminder of how it used to be several hundred years ago.
