    An underwhelming palace.
This is a somehow underwhelming palace, featuring several floors (with the lowers being of archeological themes). THe state rooms are not particularly interesting nor impressive. Visit on a Sunday, when entrance is free (you still need to get a ticket, but it's free).

    Fascinating medieval history.
Excellent national museum. I could tell it was good as I learned things! Well put together displays and at 12 euro for the full ticket which you will easily spend 3 hours doing the full ticket , good value. Great displays and very clear explanations: it was interesting to learn the history of Lithuania right from pre dark ages almost all the way through the middle ages and beyond. I had no idea for example Lithuania was pagan for so long! I particularly enjoyed the arms and armour exhibit, although small, and the recreated historical rooms you could walk through were an excellent feature also. I would say for young kids the full ticket might be a bit much but if you are an adult and have an interest in history definitely worth it. Excellent cloakroom also!

    Great for a Rainy Day
We had a very rainy morning when we visited Vilnius and had planned for a self guided walking tour but we decided to change our plans to visit this museum and we are glad we did. There is a lot of information here and some very well written exhibits and a good audio guide. There is a lot to see at the museum here and you could easily spend 2-3 hours if you want to see everything. Entrance ticket to see everything is 12 euros but they have different tickets if you only want to see certain exhibitions so you can pick and choose what you'd like to see. If you choose 2 tours the more expensive of the two will be 50% off. We felt tour 1 and 2 were the most interesting to us with your 1 being the history of the palace and Lithuania and tour 2 was the rebuilt grand palace. We paid for the audio guide which was only 1 Euro and great to listen along too because it gave more information on the most interesting items in the exhibition. We did do both tours back to back and felt it was a lot to take in. We enjoyed tour 1 the most of the two because of all the information available and the ability to see the ruins and basement of the palace that used to be here. It also has models to show the development of the area including the old walls and how things like the Gediminas Tower, Vilnius Cathedral and palace were incorporated into it. We felt tour 2 was worth the fee as well and there is an area at the end of tour 1 where museum attendants will check your tickets. It was not as interesting as tour 1 but you get to see recreations of the palace. The highlight of tour 2 was climbing the tower to get the views of the city and Gediminas Tower. There is also a painting of Madonna and child in this part of the museum which is considered to be a masterpiece. At the end of tour 2 there are some royal artifacts and copies from the crypts of Vilnius Cathedral of King Sigismund II Augustus and his family members which were neat to see. Tour 3 and 4 contain weapons, items for everyday life, and musical instruments but we did not find these as interesting and did not go. In the lobby area there is an entrance for tours 1 and 2 and a separate entrance for 3/4 so it can easily help break up your visit. The lobby area had a free coat check and lockers that took a 1 Euro coin deposit which you got back upon return of the key. The bathrooms in the lobby area require a small fee but are free to those who have a ticket and they can scan their barcodes to enter. We also appreciated that they had an umbrella locker so you could leave your wet umbrellas to drip. The museum is very central to a lot of the sights and attractions of Vilnius and if it continued to be rainy we probably would have spent 3 or more hours here to see all the tour routes in the museum.

    Definitely a go
Vas very curious to visit as did not existed years ago when my first visit occurred. Both a palace and a history museum of Lithuania. You have a lot to see and learn about the country. The first tour is about history and the second is about palace itself. Thinking it was done from scratch it is a gem.

    Unmissable history museum
Large in size, this modern museum is about the Palace of the Grand Dukes and the older Lower Castle that stood on the same place. You can see reconstructed interiors and the old stone ruins of the castle archaeologists have dug up. Reserve time to see it all, but you can pay for a cheaper ticket to visit only some of the floors of the museum. There was also a temporary exhibition of engravings that was fascinating.

    Very interesting
The museums are very interesting. The lower floors have excavations of the old walls and tell the story of Lithuania across the centuries. The upper floors have recreations of room as they would have been in the 17th and 18th century. The outside is stunning.

I arrived at 4pm, it doesn't shut until 8pm so I figured I had plenty of time. As I walked up to the ticket office, the woman was in conversation with an important looking man with a radio. They were clearly trying to sort something out with the printer, however, I stood there ignored for at least 4 minutes. I couldn't quite believe what was happening. I then paid for my ticket which cover four areas of the museum. I think this whole concept it complicated and unnecessary. I thought I would go have a coffee and a bite to eat in the cafe. As I walked in, I saw two members of staff working away but they didn't look open. I asked what time they opened thinking they must be opening soon for the evening meal crowd and the guy looked at his watch and said..."errr tomorrow" I didn't find it funny. I found him sarcastic. I paid extra 1 euro for audio guide but as I walked to the first information notice, it already had a number 3 on it. I pressed 3 and it didn't make sense with what was in front of me. I had to mess around with 1 and 2 and 3 again. I realized the numbers on the information boards didn't match up with the audio guide. I have no idea why not. Some numbers on the displays said they should have an audio guide message but it just said" there is no audio guide for this number". I have no idea why someone decided to choose a north Yorkshire retired coal miner to be the vocalist for the audio guide. It doesn't at all match up. Then I was chased back to the start because I had a small backpack on . Why this couldn't have been mentioned at the start, I dont know. So now I have to walk around holding my ticket, phone, drink, and my audio guide as I have no bag. However worse by far are the over staffed watchers as you walk around the place. I have no idea how they can afford so many watching security people, and they bore into you with their eyes, they follow you very closely, walk up and down with you. And they interfere with how you want to look at exhibits, making you go here or go there. I felt very uncomfortable with them. The 3D googles seemed a great idea until half way through the exhibition, you arrive at them, and read you should have paid extra euro at the start when I bought the ticket. No way am I walking the mile back to the ticket office to pay my extra euro. Poorly organised thinking.

This wonderful experience may be topped with classical music during the week-ends.I recommend checking on that as I've had the exprience twice on my two visits. A classical concert in the inner coyrtyard or in the high chambers is a perfect marriage to this impressive museum. The possibility of adapting the tours in different lenghts is a very good idea. I recommend the tour II.

It will take you many hours to complete the tours of this museum. It takes you on a historical walk through Lithuania‘a past in great detail. Everything is in English and the full tour is €6 or €3 for seniors. Well worth the money! Restaurant/cafe at the end with good choice of hot meals and snacks.

Palace is quite big and it takes you about 1.5 hours if you watch it lightly. There are 4 main areas history and archaeology, historical interiors, weaponry & music and then the exhibition center.

You can go to the sixth floor to hace a panoramic overview...not as good as from the tower but good enough.

Ticket is €7 p/p

Good visit

Fascinating museum which gives a really good history of Lithuania. The information on the reconstruction of the Grand Dukes Palace itself is also very interesting. The exhibits are well laid out. The museum is clean and well lit. We did tours 1,2 and 3. It's worth deciding in advance what you most want to see if you have limited time, we spent around four hours in the museum to read and look at all of the exhibits, but you could spend longer! Tour I covered the ruins of the original palace, archaeological exhibits and history of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and was our favourite. There was plenty of information to read alongside the exhibits, presented in English and Lithuanian. Audio guides were also available. Tour II covered the reconstructed historical rooms. Tour III was exhibits of armour and information on music and daily life. The sixth floor observation tower is worth a visit.

A national museum, as would be expected, is comprehensive in its presentation. However, this one, located in Old Vilnius, is worth a visit for among reasons, it is built on the ruins of the destroyed palace of the grand dukes of Lithuania. The archeological excavations are exposed behind glass floors and walls and explained in great detail in English as well as Lithuanian. The history of the country is superbly documented. The highlight, though, during my visit was the exhibition of the Tapestry Collection of the grand duke Sigismund Augustus and the King of Poland. The collection is on view until July 16. These are magnificent creations of textiles from the sixteenth century displaying scenes from the Bible, wilderness, and rural areas. The huge pieces of art are hung in large rooms with sophisticated lighting that highlights the thread work and are accompanied by informative notes on the sides. The tapestries were created between 1550 and 1560 by weavers in Brussels and many carry the initials SA - for the Duke who commissioned them. This artistic treasure was saved during World War II by having it moved to Canada. Thanks to that we can appreciate this highest level of craftsmanship!
The museum offers a 50 percent discount on admission to those over 65. Need to show proof.

The museum exceeded my expectations. It is very big and you can choose different routes based on your intetests. We did all four and it took around five hours. If you are short on time, I recommend taking only route one. That gives you an introduction about Lithuaniab history. Recommend taking the audioguide and also reading texts on the walls to get most of your visit. Second route is about rooms in palace. Interiors are not so opulent as in famous European palaces but interesting enough. Third route is not so good as first and second and I hope that it will be developed and more exibhits and info texts are added in the future. Exhibitions in route four are changing constantly. Your ticket is valid for full day so you can take a lunch break and come back later.

If you are in Vilnius you must not miss this historical site. What they have done with this Dukes Palace which was devastated over the years is amazing. Be prepared to spend a lot of time here as the presentation and artistically presented information is extraordinary. What would it have cost to do the research and renovations here? It must have cost an enormous amount of time and money. Highly recommended as a top historical site in Europe.
