This is a somehow underwhelming palace, featuring several floors (with the lowers being of archeological themes). THe state rooms are not particularly interesting nor impressive. Visit on a Sunday, when entrance is free (you still need to get a ticket, but it's free).

Excellent national museum. I could tell it was good as I learned things! Well put together displays and at 12 euro for the full ticket which you will easily spend 3 hours doing the full ticket , good value. Great displays and very clear explanations: it was interesting to learn the history of Lithuania right from pre dark ages almost all the way through the middle ages and beyond. I had no idea for example Lithuania was pagan for so long! I particularly enjoyed the arms and armour exhibit, although small, and the recreated historical rooms you could walk through were an excellent feature also. I would say for young kids the full ticket might be a bit much but if you are an adult and have an interest in history definitely worth it. Excellent cloakroom also!

We had a very rainy morning when we visited Vilnius and had planned for a self guided walking tour but we decided to change our plans to visit this museum and we are glad we did. There is a lot of information here and some very well written exhibits and a good audio guide. There is a lot to see at the museum here and you could easily spend 2-3 hours if you want to see everything. Entrance ticket to see everything is 12 euros but they have different tickets if you only want to see certain exhibitions so you can pick and choose what you'd like to see. If you choose 2 tours the more expensive of the two will be 50% off. We felt tour 1 and 2 were the most interesting to us with your 1 being the history of the palace and Lithuania and tour 2 was the rebuilt grand palace. We paid for the audio guide which was only 1 Euro and great to listen along too because it gave more information on the most interesting items in the exhibition. We did do both tours back to back and felt it was a lot to take in. We enjoyed tour 1 the most of the two because of all the information available and the ability to see the ruins and basement of the palace that used to be here. It also has models to show the development of the area including the old walls and how things like the Gediminas Tower, Vilnius Cathedral and palace were incorporated into it. We felt tour 2 was worth the fee as well and there is an area at the end of tour 1 where museum attendants will check your tickets. It was not as interesting as tour 1 but you get to see recreations of the palace. The highlight of tour 2 was climbing the tower to get the views of the city and Gediminas Tower. There is also a painting of Madonna and child in this part of the museum which is considered to be a masterpiece. At the end of tour 2 there are some royal artifacts and copies from the crypts of Vilnius Cathedral of King Sigismund II Augustus and his family members which were neat to see. Tour 3 and 4 contain weapons, items for everyday life, and musical instruments but we did not find these as interesting and did not go. In the lobby area there is an entrance for tours 1 and 2 and a separate entrance for 3/4 so it can easily help break up your visit. The lobby area had a free coat check and lockers that took a 1 Euro coin deposit which you got back upon return of the key. The bathrooms in the lobby area require a small fee but are free to those who have a ticket and they can scan their barcodes to enter. We also appreciated that they had an umbrella locker so you could leave your wet umbrellas to drip. The museum is very central to a lot of the sights and attractions of Vilnius and if it continued to be rainy we probably would have spent 3 or more hours here to see all the tour routes in the museum.

Vas very curious to visit as did not existed years ago when my first visit occurred. Both a palace and a history museum of Lithuania. You have a lot to see and learn about the country. The first tour is about history and the second is about palace itself. Thinking it was done from scratch it is a gem.

Large in size, this modern museum is about the Palace of the Grand Dukes and the older Lower Castle that stood on the same place. You can see reconstructed interiors and the old stone ruins of the castle archaeologists have dug up. Reserve time to see it all, but you can pay for a cheaper ticket to visit only some of the floors of the museum. There was also a temporary exhibition of engravings that was fascinating.

The museums are very interesting. The lower floors have excavations of the old walls and tell the story of Lithuania across the centuries. The upper floors have recreations of room as they would have been in the 17th and 18th century. The outside is stunning.
