I got to this location using the hop on hop off bus. This is a special and religious spot. Ths is the original gate or entrance to the city of Vilnous Old Town. It was build centuries ago.. I think in the 1500s. There is a chapel above this walk through gate. Thia is a very popular and historic area for many people.
It is known around the world by many. Keep in mind Vilnius is a UNESCO protected city.

The entrance to this attraction is a door at the street level. There are steps to take to get a closer look of the image of Virgin Mary. The space is very small so lingering here is not a viable option. Taking photos of the image is NOT allowed, a female guard would let you know. Option B - take a picture from outside, just zoom it.

Definitely worth visiting. The location within the city wall above the gates and overall atmosphere gives a special feeling. Have been visiting Vilnius many times, but visited this place only recently. Recommend not to miss it.

Today, most people associate the Gates of Dawn with a house of prayer. However, a few centuries ago, the name Gates of Dawn referred to part of Vilnius’ defensive wall. At that time, the city’s defensive wall had ten gates, though the Gates of Dawn are the only ones to have survived to the present day. The structure’s defensive function is reflected by the firing openings that are still visible on the outside of the gate.

The Gates of Dawn were first mentioned in 1514. The name Gates of Dawn referred to part of Vilnius’ defensive wall. At that time, the city’s defensive wall had ten gates and the Gates of Dawn are the only ones which survived. Today it is associated worldwide by Catholics, Russian Orthodox and Greek Orthodox with worship and miracles caused by Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy. Her miraculous painting in the Gates of Dawn is one of the most famous Renaissance paintings in Lithuania. The miraculous painting is also called the Madonna of the Gates of Dawn or the Madonna of Vilnius. It is located in the chapel and was painted specifically for this chapel in the 17th century, following the example of Dutch painter Martin de Vos. The chapel was first wooden but after the fire it was made of brick.

The whole Ausros Vartu (Gate of Dawn) street is an unmissable part of Vilnius. There are three beautiful churches near each other and many quaint shops and restaurants. The actual Gate of Dawn chapel is also great to see. When I visited there was a mass going on and you could hear the singing down on the street. The chapel itself is quite small and might not be so interesting unless you're a practising Catholic.

A stairway to the side leads up to this alcove and it fits about 12 people...no photography allowed (even without flash). Unless you want to pray, I'd say skip it as there are tons of other churches you can sit in and relect.

Visiting the gate of dawn takes maybe 20 minutes. Go inside and experience the old polish women praying in front of the madonna. When we were there, a priest came out to take confessions. On a whole a short but interesting experience. No entrance fee.

the gate is the only one left from the original wall arounf Vilnius. It is now a chapel that contains a pictures that has performed miracles across the years. You can go upstairs and see the image and it was lovely to see those with faith all sitting underneath the window where the picture is showing homage.

Walked up the staircase to the top where a service was taking place with signs requesting not to photograph. I didn't but a lot of people obviously are very ignorant. Although I could not understand it I enjoyed the service. Afterwards wandered through the church at the bottom.
